Friends and Family, Please enjoy this correspondence below, reading from the bottom up for the right chronology. We have yet another branch of the George Lea Jessee family connecting to us, as well as a descendant of Mary Polly Jessee Kiser, not to mention her Counts, Skeen, Castle, Suit, and Buckles roots, all deep in SW VA. I am sure Denise will appreciate any help you can give her in her exploration. I hope they do make the Jessee Reunion this August 9, 2008 and that they can find some help to explore their George Lea Jessee roots in Russell Co. My father died when I was 10 years old, in 1957, and he was also 40, so I know of this kind of loss. May I share our correspondence in the Jessee Newletter and forward it to the Jessee list? There will be interest in this, and you can get help at the reunion to go see the original John Jessee place, which your George Lea Jessee inherited or bought out his brothers. The George Lea Cemetery is there, with John and Frankey, among others. I look forward to including the marriage and descendants information for Fairbanks in the Jessee Database, and thank you for helping with that. Yes, Carlos is a not a typical Jessee name! I do have one Fairbanks Jessee, born 1906 in Castlewood, Russell Co., VA, which is nearby the original Jessee Home Place, of John Jessee, Sr who married Frankey Lea, and settled at Jessee's Mill, near Castlewood, VA in 1790. I have been there many times, although I live in California, borh here. My Jessee family came here in 1906 from Illinois, and had left Castewood area about 1870 for Illinois. Please go to my database at www.jessee.org <http://www.jessee.org/> , and see if this Fairbanks Jessee, RIN 21382, fits the time frame. If so there is an extensive pedigree there for him. We would be about 5th cousins, as your line goes back to George Lea Jessee and Mary Polly Jessee Kiser, two of the 15 children of John and Frankey. I descend from their brother, John Jessee, Jr. I do not have any marriage or descendants information for him, so you would be my first contact for him. If this is your Fairbanks, you would be a Counts descendant, too. And that makes you about an 9th cousin to my wife! I also have two Carlos Jessees in my database, but not Carlos James with a father of Fairbanks. Let me know if this fits. Would also love to share your note in the Jessee Newsletter. See those also on the Website. I have seen the information posted about Lafayette moving to MN, but my research in MN cannot document this as a fact. Per his will, Lafayette died c1871 (likely in Russell Co VA). His farm was still intact at the time of his death and passed to his two sons. Several years after Lafayette's death, Harriet Virginia Patrick had a son. She remarried to John B. Compton and had several more children. Lafayette's brother, Jasper Newton Rasnake, and Jasper's spouse, Malinda Patrick (younger sister to Lafayette's spouse, Harriet Virginia Patrick), did migrate along with the Oliver Rasnake family and other Russell Co VA families to MN per the census there. More information on the line of Gabriel Lafayette Rasnake can be found in the last revision (Dec 2006) to the second edition of Judge Sutherland's book entitled "Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2008 12:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VARUSSEL] Rasnake This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Linda, Wanda Green especially, and her friends and I researched this Vance/Gross/McKinney family a few years ago, some of what we found, after extensive research, follows: Rebecca was Allen's 2nd wife. She was born Carter Co., TN around 1840 She was Rebecca Moseley d/o P. Harper Mosely and Marinda "Rindy" McKinney Rindy McKinney later married John Vance. Rebecca and her sister, Mary "Polly" carried the Vance name of their stepfather until they were adults, and then started going by Moseley until they were married. By the way, Mary Polly Mosely-Vance married Andy Gross s/o of Allen Gross So, the sisters Rebecca and Polly married father and son! Another way to look at it; Andy married his stepmother's sister. Andy was my wife's g-g grandfather so yes you and my wife are 3rd cousins. Hi Linda, I believe Alben is possibly Allen, and Elizabeth was called Betsy. It is possible that Henry was Emory Henry. Or, this could be another family. See the 1850 census record below. His death record on the Federal Mortality Schedules indicates he was in Buchanan County at the time (1880) and had been living there for 24 years, since 1856. On the 1870, he is there with Rebecca age 27, and there is no indication if she is wife or other but she is "Keeping House." Cosby E. is noted to be a Domestic Servant, and there is no indication as to whom the younger children belong to. Hopefully more research will put more pieces together. I am not able to find an 1860 or 1840 record for Allen Gross. Hope this helps, Michelle 1850 United States Federal Census Name: Allen Gross Age: 40 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1810 Birth Place: Virginia Gender: Male Home in 1850(City,County,State): Western District, Tazewell, Virginia Household Members: Name Age Allen Gross 40 Andy Gross 8 Betsy Gross 40 Elenor Gross 3 Emma Gross 1 Emory Gross 6 John Gross 10 Lorah Gross 13 Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Western District, Tazewell, Virginia; Roll: M432_979; Page: 308; Image: 190. 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Allen Gross Estimated Birth Year: 1812 Age in 1870: 58 Birthplace: Virginia Home in 1870: Garden, Buchanan, Virginia Race: White Gender: Male Value of real estate: View image Post Office: Grundy Household Members: Name Age Allen Gross 58 Rebecca Gross 27 Cosby E Gross 32 Arminda Gross 5 John Gross 3 Henderson Gross 2 Elisabeth Gross 1 Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: Garden, Buchanan, Virginia; Roll: M593_1637; Page: 178; Image: 357. On Henry Gross and Lila Vance marriage record, it lists Alben and Elizabeth Gross as his parents. That is the only time I have seen his name. Do you have any information on him and where did you find it? I would love to be able to knock down at least one brick wall. Thanks.
