Hi Carol: I have tons of information on the Dorton family. My gramdmother was a Dorton. I guess I should tell you right off that by no stretch of the imagination are we in any way connected to the Robert Benge family. That story originated from an item published in the Lebanon News around 1920. A Jonas Rasnick told the News that " The old folks used to tell about a white man named Dorton, who was wild and reckless and lived in the Indian Country. He was said to be the father of Benje the chief of the Cherokees. Colonel Henson Hobbs, of Maryland, one of my uncles, told about these incidents and I wrote it up for the Lebanon News. It was said that Arthur Hobbs, an uncle of Col. Henson Bobbs, killed Benje in Lee Co, near Cumberland Gap." As you probably know the incident did not take place near Cumberland Gap and Arthur Hobbs did not kill Benje, Vincent Hobbs did. Lawrence J. Fleenor Jr. wrote a book called "BENGE" which turned out to be and absolute joke. You may have seen or heard about it. It tells about the Dorton family and Benge living at the Dorton Fort near Nicklesville. The Dorton Fort was on the William Dorton Sr. land near Dickensonville which now has the new historical marker on it as a result of documentation I provided. And as I said I have a lot of data on the Dorton family and can provide any details you might be interested in. For example the first two Dorton children, William Jr. born 1750 and Edward in 1751 were born near Richmond VA and Robert Benge was born ca 1760 in southeast TN to John Benge and Wurteh. There was no Wurteh Watts Benge. Let me know what data you might want. Hamilton (1968), in Historical Sketches of Southwest Virginia, No. 4, pp. 1-26 (http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/other/forts.html): "OTHER FORTS ON THE CLINCH NEW GARDEN STATION In the beautiful New Garden section of Russell Co., VA, on the south side of the Clinch was another very early fort called the New Garden Station. This is another the historians have passed by and no historical marker denotes its existence, even the people now living in the area are unaware that a fort ever existed there. This section of Russell Co. was settled very early, in fact as early as 1769, and upon whose land and when the fort was built is not known. Certainly it can be proven that the fort stood upon Thompson's Creek, from this entry in Washington Co., VA Land Entry Book, dated August 20, 1780, which reads: We, the Commissioners, etc...do certify that Israel Christian is entitled to 100 acres of land near the New Garden Fort, on the north side of Clinch River, on the waters of Thompson's Creek. The New Garden Station may have been built as early as 1774 and manned by the settlers in proximity to it. Certainly there is no militia list for it at this early date, and neither is it listed as one of the garrisoned forts under Captain Daniel Smith's command at this time. Settlers of the New Garden section would have been at the complete mercy of the Shawnee entering through the Sandy war passes, and sanctuary in either Elk Garden or Castlewood fort would have been miles away. Considering these conditions and the very early settlement of the area it seems that an early fort would have been a most urgent necessity of the settlers. Both Andrew Lynam and George Huffaker in their pension application say they served at this fort under a Lieutenant James Leeper in the year 1777, with Huffaker saying that when he served there Alexander Smith and a Mr. Jackson lived there. Robert Sinclair says in his pension claim that he served there in the fall of 1776 or 1777 under Captain William Norton. These statements not only prove the existence of the fort, but also that it did exist at an early date. George William Settle in an unpublished history of Russell County entitled "A Brief History of the Earliest Generations and Events, Etc., In the Eastern Part of Russell Co., VA", page 53, states: About one half mile north of Oaks Garage, or around 300 yards up the ridge from Robert Green's was an Indian fort where twenty-five or thirty people lived for protection against the Indians. Some old man told me they would go down to the big spring below the road, eat and go back to the fort, but never without the men along with their rifles. The above traditional statement may actually pinpoint the location of the New Garden Fort."; _____________________ from Kegley (1974), pg. 67 [Soldiers of Fincastle Co., 1774]: "Jacob Jackson, 1 steer"; from accounts paid; _____________________ from Washington Co. index to county court order books: Jacob Jackson exemption, book 1, pg. 244, 1784; _____________________ from Crabtree (1987), pg. 52; _____________________ from Washington Co. surveyors book 1, pg. 68: "Thomas Ferral, heir...142 ac...Commissioners Certificate...on both sides of a small branch, waters of Thompsons Creek, branch of Clinch River...Beginning by a path...March 21, 1783 - Thomas Ferral, heir to William Ferral, decd, assignee of Richard Thompson, assignee of Jacob Jackson...300 ac...on the north side of Clinch River in the New Garden, includes improvements, actual settlement made in 1772...August 24, 1781"; _____________________ from Burton (1976), pg. 24: Jacob Jackson on Botetourt Co. tax list 22, pp. 54-55: tax list for 1772, taken by F. OK, I found a 4th way to help Outlook users with the link problem. Before you open a message, while you are in the Inbox view, 1. click on Tools 2. click Options 3. click Mail format tab 4. click Internet format button 5. Under "Plain Text options" change the number in the box where it says" Automatically wrap at 'xx'characters. I set mine to 128, it was 76. If that's not enough try a larger number. You won't have to change these settings again, only this one time. Now open your message, click on Forward or Reply and use the delete key to make it a single line and then hit enter after that to make it a hyperlink.
