The county lines were redrawn several times. A county would start as a large area, and as more people came, it would be split and split again, for governmental/tax purposes. During this early time in history, state lines were moved also. For example, the state of Kentucky was formed from Kentucky County, Virginia. In 1790 the first family came from Norh Carolinia and it became Wilks Co.and now Flat Gap. Then in 1856 Wise formed Lee, Russell,Scott. Now St. Paul. I have never been there and quite confused. When was Washinton Co. formed? How could people be there in 1811(When my family is supposed to be born? The 1920 Russell Co. census, Copper Creek district, shows John Salyer 55, Garfield 15 son, Charlie 10 son. Based on the age of John I suspect he was not the father of Garfield and Charlie.
