I knew of the 1880 wise co. census, I figured that was probably my James, since I couldn't find him elsewhere in the census. His son was called Ed, I've searched for Edward,Edgar. But, It's possible that his name was Samuel "Edmund", since James had an older brother named Edmund(1850 census). The marriage record of 1870 is a great help. Thank You Like you, I now believe that they are one and the same. I can work on Pheba Meadows and the "Edmund" names and see what I come up with. again, thank you very much Jerry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. On the 1860 RCV census there is: John Hess 47, Sally 42, Patsey 18, Henry 17, William 15, Letty 14, John 12, Patton 11, Harvey 9 (I think this is James Harvey), Elizabeth 7, Martha 5 and Sylvester 3. James or Harvey isn't with his parents in 1870 and I haven't found him on any 1870 census record yet. I think this may be because he might have been missed by the census takers. I say this because I think he was moving around at that time. I say this because I found the following marriage in the 1870 Wise Co., VA marriage records: 20 Dec 1870: J. W. Hess, age 16, single, b. Rus. Co., VA, resident of Wise Co., son of John & Sally Hess, married Pheba Meadows, age 26, widowed, b. Scott Co., VA, resident of Wise Co., dau. of John & Mary Pucket. Couple was married by William G. Hess Note that this info comes from the book Wise Co., VA Marriage register, 1856-1886 by John Mullins. I haven't seen the actual marriage register so it may be that the middle initial may have been mis-interpreted. The original should be checked. Also, just for info, Phoebe Puckett was first married to Bennett Meadows in Wise. Co. on 19 Nov 1857. On the 1880 Wise Co. census is the following: James H. Hess 27, Ellen 26, Samuel E. 1 mo. This James Hess appears to be the same person who married in 1870 as the ages match and he also closely matche the age for Harvey Hess from 1860, but the wife is obviously a problem. Either James has married a second time by then or Phoebe's middle name was Ellen and she was fudging on her age. I noted that you said James Harvey Hess had a son named Ed from his first marriage. Could this have been Samuel Edward Hess? then next you have the marriage record from 1882: 15 Apr 1882: James Hess, age 25, widowed, born in Russell Co., parents John & Sally Hess, married Catharine Hess, age 18, single, born in Russell Co., parents James & Elizabeth Hess. Couple was married by William Hess. Note that William Hess performed both the marriages above. I think this Harvey, J. W., James H. and James Hess are all the same person, a son of John Hess & Sarah "Sally" Witt. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Julia, I'm aware of Jeff's health issues and there was no attempt to attack his character on my part. I believe his character is just fine and if you look about the Russell County VAGenWeb Project you'll see that I have several links to his sites on there. I was just saying that when I've emailed him in the past he hasn't been very reponsive and I wasn't sure what kind of response I would get this time if any. Mike, I'm truly sorry to hear about your computer disaster. I would be mortified. Thank you for letting us know, because I visit Mr. Weaver's wonderful website often. As an aside, I understand that to say someone is "not responsive" is not the same as saying someone "ignores" you/your emails. Many people I email are unresponsive and I have learned not to take it personally. Emails get lost, addresses are not valid, messages are suspected as spam, and there is a longer list of other reasons. In any case, I understood that you meant you were not sure you'd be able reach him to notify him about the virus lurking on his site. Thanks again, Michelle
Knowing Jeff I can safely say he has never ignored your email without reason. Jeff has major health problems and can not always answer the great amount of email he receives in a timely manner due to circumstances beyond his control. Being legally blind makes it a little difficult to read them, for one. In the past he has dedicated many, many hours for the service of others which should be more than a subtle hint of his character. A character not one of purposely ignoring others. If there's a problem with his site, I'm sure he'll have it taken care of as soon as possible. I attempted to go to the photo gallery on his website a few days ago while at work and it downloaded this virus on my work computer which then casued the server to crash. I did a google search for New River Notes tonight and see that google has placed a note under the link for the photo gallery link that if you attempt to visit the photo gallery it may be harmful to your computer. When you click on the link to google's note it says that the website may download malicious software on your computer and it recommends you not visit the site. It does not appear that there is a problem with the rest of his site, just the photo gallery. I have sent him and his website tech guy an email advising him of this problem, but he has never been very responsive to my emails in the past. I'll wait and see if I get a response this time since I cc'd his tech guy. In the meantime I would recommend that you not visit the photo gallery on his website. Trying to find out who his parents were. I've seen James Hess mentioned but at this point I've seen so many Hess records that I'm lost. Any help would be appreciated.
