The following is a list of children, some of whom lived in Washington Co VA: Rebecca -died Chesterfield Co VA 1850 & unmarried Francis - lived at "The Meadows" Washington Co VA, was dec'd by 1854, was wife of Wyndham Robinson Catherine -m. Hickman Spiller of Wythe Co, was dec'd as of 1854, two children; William H. Spiller & Catherine Findley, wife of Alexander Findley (Washington Co) Lewis - resided Washington Co, dec'd by 1854, one son named Ballard Ballard - referred to as "Hon", resided Greenbrier Co VA William - resided Greenbrier Co VA, referred to as "Capt." Sarah - widow of Frederick Y Roddy, dec'd by 1854, had lived in Manchester VA. Joseph - dec'd as of 1854, children: Elizabeth (wife of John D. Mitchell of Wash. Co.). She says that her husband served in "western Virginia" under Col Campbell, Capt Scott & Capt Thompson, but does not say from what county. Rachel Hatfield of Campbell Co (at age 84) made statement for her in 1843 & said that she was present at the marriage of Eli Smith & Jane Denna(?), and that the marriage was performed by Simon Cockerl(?) Richard Crabtree also made statement 1843 (at age 78) & said he served with Eli Smith. Joseph Hart & John Kincaid, esq also made statements. They were married 8 Apr 1783 & he died 19 Apr 1836. He was 72 in 1833. There is a copy of the marriage bond for Edward Smith & Hannah Crabtree, the other bondsman being Ezekiel Kelly. The bond is dated 30 Aug 1787 & Hannah states they were m. 6 Sept 1787. Edward gives as references William Snodgrass of Sullivan Co TN, Jacob Crabtree Sr & John Fulkerson of Lee Co VA, and Jonas Smith of Washington Co VA, all of whom made statements for him. Abraham Crabtree, clergyman & resident of Lee Co VA also made statement for him. In 1853 Hannah filed in Owsley Co KY for widows pension, & gives dod for Edward as 6 Dec 1852 in Owsley Co KY. In 1856 she files for bounty land in Estill Co KY at age 88. Thomas Hall of Owsley Co KY made statement for her & stated that he knew them since 1810 or 12. He states he was b. in NC & his father moved to VA when he was abt 8 yrs old. He entered service at about 16 yrs of age in 1776 as a sub for his brother John in Washington Co VA. He said that the record of his birth was with his brother who had moved to Arkansas territory. In his app he mentions that Solomon Kenderick was an Indian spy & was killed at Powell's Valley by Indians. He also served as a spy & was paired with Andrew Lenium, who was also killed by Indians. Lenium was replaced by William Richardson. He mentions Osborne's & Baker's "settlements in the forks of New River". He moved to Missouri in 1812.
