I know of some Duffs, descendants of Oscar's nephew Samuel Adams Duff, living near Bristol, could try to dig out contact info. I haven't managed to locate the old Duff mill or cemetery in Belfast yet, but a picture of the mill (in considerable disrepair) has circulated in print and on the internet, including on the Russell Co. Civil war site. Yeah, I know the general location pretty well now, and some relatives on the Steele side (my ggg-grandma was Malinda Steele) located the cemetery on New Garden Rd. and took a few pictures there within the past month. It should be very close to the old house I'm trying to locate, if it's still standing. I'd be much obliged for more help--I'm planning a trip there in mid-November (first chance I'll have), and can use all the clues I can get. If you're interested or don't have 'em already, I've got a bit of material on Oscar Duff, he was a POW in Ft. Delaware the same time as Sam, when most of Co. C of the 37th Va. were overrun and captured at Spottsylvania, that I could send. -Tres Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. D and K, This is Mike. It's possible we did, but I don't remember discussing the records of the overseers of the poor. I've certainly never seen them at the courthouse. I have discussed my theories as to the first will and marriage books. As to having a lead on the location of either of these books or the records of the overseers of the poor, I'm sorry, but I don't have one. After looking at your father's map, and visiting google earth, I believe the coordinates for the sight you are looking for are 36 degrees 57 minutes and 59.39 secs North by 82 degrees 06 minutes and 45.66 secs West. This will be in the northwest section of the county near the community of Artrip. I will be visiting within the next two months and will try to find your homestead. If sucessful, I will take pictures and e-mail to you if you desire. I'm still looking for Duff's and other relatives from that area. Hello, We are writing this in an effort to reach Mr. Mike Dye who we understand is the only one who can answer this question for us. Regarding the Overseer of the Poor book for Russell County in 1810- #Russell County court ordered that James Francis, John Chaney, Hezekiah Chaney, and Able Chaney, all poor children be bound out as apprentices in 1810. Court order 4 page 135. Our John would have been about 7 years old. Were they all related as brothers? The information regarding the 3 boys while reviewing the Russell county court order books. In those days the court appointed someone to be the "Overseer of the Poor". These people were sort of like present day social workers and in this particular case the person was responsible for seeing that these Chaneys boys were apprenticed to someone as their parents were too poor to provide for them. I can assure you they were not orphans. If they had been orphans the court would have handled the boys very differently. When Lane was at the courthouse in Lebanon VA several years back, the clerk allowed them to look for the book where the Overseers recorded their activities (they had to report to the court concerning their activities) and we could not locate this book. I believe that if that book can be found it would tell us who their parents were! I contacted Mike Dye who is a very knowledgeable person concerning Russell county records and he told me that he believed that it was deliberately taken from the courthouse many years ago and that he might have a lead on who had it.

In the 1880 Carter CO, KY, Federal census, there is a family enumerated whose names, dates and ages seem in concordance with the information we know: on pg. 31 of the Carter Co census, James (who would have been 27 at the time of his marriage, and Elizabeth, who would have been 16, have living with them, in addition to their son,John, his wife Olivia and their infant son, Robert, two BARTEE nephews and a niece: Henry (20), David (16) and Nancy J.(15). If thatMrs. James Williams was born Eliz. Bartee, these would be her relatives. Further more, Carter county is adjacent to the county where my Great-great grandparents, William Roscoe Porter and his wife, Mary "Polly" Bartee Porter, originally from Grayson CO, VA and Russell Co, VA, respectively, had come, gotten married [in Greenup--now Boyd CO, KY] and where their three children were born. I have gl! anced at records in the past and there were numerous other Bartee families in the area contemporaneously. Indeed, my GGgrandparent's household in Ashland, KY,included Mary Bartee's mother, Mahala Ring Bartee. After the Civil War, all of my aforementioned antecedants moved further west, to Osage CO, Kansas. Various Bartees are listed in both the Scranton City Cemetery and another Osage CO, KS, cemetery as well. It is also surely not a coincidence that a principal city in Carter CO, KY, is named Grayson--the name of the western Virginia county originally home to some of these people. Might this be worth pursuing? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
