    3. Hello John, Ivanhoe VA is in Wythe County which is quite mountainous and even now pretty rural. My great great grandfather and my great grandfather were both teachers that went into people's homes to teach. My great great grandfather taught in Montgomery County, and apparently my great grandfather travelled to whever he could get a position. I would guess in 1889 when your individual was 6 years old, he probably went to something of just what I mentioned or the "one room schoolhouse" where they had slates and taught reading in the McGuffy readers (which are quite good for literature, spelling, ethical behavior, etc.) You might write to the Board of Education in Wythe County or Virginia State Library in Richmond, VA --- Paul Drake <pauldrake@charter.net> wrote: > what county is that? > ----- Original Message ----- > From: John Murnan > To: VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Thursday, December 11, 2003 2:06 PM > Subject: [VAROOTS] Education > > > Hello to list, > > I have a question that someone may be able to > help me with. > If a man were born in 1883, three to five > miles from Ivan Hoe, Virginia and > lived in that area until he was at least 19 > years old, and supposing that he > attended school, what schooling/education > would have been available to him > in that area at that time? > > Thank you, > John Murnan > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 > billion online genealogy records, go to: > > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion > online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
