Dunmore's War (Virginia Payrolls/Public Service Claims, 1775) - The index contains the names of Virginia citizens or soldiers from the counties of Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, Culpeper, and Fincastle who were compensated in 1775 for supplies or service during Dunmore's Expedition in 1774. Entries in the volume include names, length of service or item being compensated for, and the amount of compensation in pounds, shillings, and pence. I found an Edward Thursby listed in the above claims records. My 4th great-grandfather is Edward Thursby (not a common name) but all I have been able to find out about him is when he married Ann Sasscer in Prince George's County, Maryland in 1784. He is a stone wall for me. The Sasscer family were very large land owners and her father, William, gives them land after their marriage. I know tons about him and his descendents but nothing before the marriage. Two of the counties listed in the claims records, I don't know--Botetourt and Fincastle. The other's I found on an old map of around 1780. Also since this is my first search in Virginia, I am at a loss as where to begin tracking down information. Any help would be appreciated. Jane Thursby From England to Maryland by the early 1700's and still Maryland.
