I have an 1850 census image that appears to have come from Hardy Co VA but I can't find a Hardy Co. Can someone tell me if I'm misreading it or what happened to it? George
Hardy CO became part of WV in 1863. It became Hardy County, West Virginia. When Virginia ceded from the USA at the beginning of the Civil War, the people in the western part of the state did not want to go. They were not at all like the eastern Virginia folk on the other side of the mountains. They were finally able to form the new state of West Virginia during this period.
