    3. Steve and Bunny Found the below to be very helpful. >>We have uploaded our new images for "1790" Buckingham, the 1788 Personal Property Tax Lists A and B, to our "1790 / 1800 County Tax Lists of Virginia" website. Please follow the Buckingham County link found at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ysbinns/vataxlists/index.htm << Do you have a reference that would help me understand the significance of the "a" list and "b" list? It is very hard to read the column headers. If there is a reference to the column headers, it would help. I'm not sure they are the same from county to county, so this may not be possible, but would help. Thanks, Pat (in Tucson)

    3. Hi Pat, The A and B lists are for the two precincts that existed in the county. These precincts could be different parish boundaries or some other physical definition such as valleys, rivers, etc. Sometimes the precincts were even militia districts. A good summary for tithe lists, personal property tax lists, and land tax lists can be found at the Library of Virginia website. Here are the specific links: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/tax/rn17_tithables.htm http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/tax/rn3_persprop.htm http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/rn1_landtax.htm The column headings are very similar from county to county, year to year. Here's a columns summary: 1788A columns: 1) Date 2) Mens Names Charged with Tax 3) Names of White Tithes 4) Blacks above 16 5) Blacks above 12 6) Horses 7) Studs 8) Rates per Season 9) Carriages 1788B columns: 1) Dates 1788 2) Persons Names Charged With the Tax 3) Free Tithes 4) Blacks Above 16 5) Blacks Under 16 and Above 12 6) Horses 7) Rates of Stud Horses, per Season, Ordinary Licenses, Wheel Carriages, etc, etc, etc Hope this helps !!
