I don't have any specific books to mention to you, without knowing the names of your ancestors (but that is what you are looking for, isn't it? <G>). From a general viewpoint, however, you have some great resources available to you, "even" in California. Where are you in California? If near San Francisco, there is the Sutro Library. This library has censuses, family histories, location histories by state, etc. I spend hours there every time I go. Now, if you are in the desert, or waaay up north knocking on Oregon's door, there is probably an LDS Family History Center somewhere close.
