    3. I don't have any specific books to mention to you, without knowing the names of your ancestors (but that is what you are looking for, isn't it? <G>). From a general viewpoint, however, you have some great resources available to you, "even" in California. Where are you in California? If near San Francisco, there is the Sutro Library. This library has censuses, family histories, location histories by state, etc. I spend hours there every time I go. "Sutro Library 480 Winston Drive San Francisco, CA 94132 Phone: 415-731-4477 Email to: sutro@library.ca.gov The Sutro Library in San Francisco is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Beginning May 1, 2003, the Sutro Library will not be open on Saturdays. In 2003, the Sutro Library will be closed on: Jan 1, 20, Feb. 12, 17, Mar. 31, May 26, July 4, Sept. 1, Oct. 13, Nov. 11, 27, 28, and Dec. 25." Not to mention the National Archives in San Bruno and Laguna Nigel. (U.S.) National Archives and Records Administration Branch, San Bruno, 1000 Commodore Dr., San Bruno, CA 94066. Ph:(650) 876-9001, www.nara.gov/regional/sanfranc.html and http://www.archives.gov/facilities/ca/laguna_niguel.html Of course the LA public library has quite a lot also. Now, if you are in the desert, or waaay up north knocking on Oregon's door, there is probably an LDS Family History Center somewhere close. Another really good resource is: http://catalog.loc.gov/ You can do a search with surname and location and you will get gobs of possibilities. If you have some names, toss them out to us, and we can help better.
