This library in this rural area finally managed to get cavaliers/pioneers on a inter library loan, the first three abyway . I just need to find which books have my HULETTS in them and maybe I will get to read all about them ! I am excited about this . Linda in Ca with a whole slug of VA ancestors Ms2001@aol.com wrote: To explain what "Cavaliers and Pioneers" is, I've compiled this information from the Introductions to Volumes I - V ........ Cavaliers and Pioneers began with 3 volumes that lists abstracts of the Virginia Land Patents and Grants from 1623-1749 by Nell Marion Negent who was the custodian of the Land Office from 1825 - 1958. Mrs Nugent had planned a series of 5 books to cover the patents and grants through the 17th and 18th centuries. Volume 1 abstracts patent books 1- 5 covering 1623 - 1665 and was published in 1934. Volume II has patent books 6 - 7 covering the years 1666 - 1695 and Volume III has books 9 - 14 covering the years 1695 - 1732. These volumes were delayed when Mrs Nugent's supporter, Anges Bernadine Sitterding, had to abandon the project after the type was set. Copies of Mrs Nugent's corrected proofs survived and were placed in the Va State Library along with the Land Office records. Eventually the set type was destroyed. VSL finally got Volume 2 published in 1977 and Volume 3 in 1979. Volumes IV & V were published in 1994 by the Va Genealogical Society edited by Denis Hudgins. Volume IV covers the years 1732 - 1741 and patent books 15 - 19. Volume V covers 1741 - 1749 and books 20 - 28. This set of books is the "best available chronicle of immigration of freemen, slaves, and indentured servants to colonial Virginia". There are 2 references to Thomas Kirbye in Volume I. The first (page 113) is for the land patent for Lt Richard Popeley - 1250 acres on June 10, 1639 at Middle Plantation (later Williamsburg) for the transportation of 25 persons including Thomas Kirbye. The second (page 156) states that Thomas Kirbye was assigned the land of Thomas Symons on Dec 28, 1642, who received the land for the tranpostation of 9 persons on Nov 25, 1637. Hope this is helpful. I'm not sure what I was looking at when I jotted this down but evidently I had intentions of looking it up. Took time out to finish college, raise a family, etc and today I saw your reference to Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol 1. Can you tell me more about this book or set of books and if in fact there is a Kirbye mentioned. I would very much appreciate any info. From other information I have I believe there was a Thomas Kirbye back in Virginia who may have been one of my great grandfathers, several generations back. I think my Kirby line settled in VA in the early 1600's, then some moved to NC and from there to SC and my great grandfather Richard Monroe Kirby, abt 20 years old, moved from the Spartanburg area to Smith Co in East Texas in about 1878 where my line has been ever since. Page 113 - Lawsr Hulett witness to patent for Farncis Derricle & Richard Johnson Oct 14, 1638 Page 226 - show Lawrence Hulett is Treasurer of Council & Company of Adventurers and Planters for Southern Colony of Virginia 10 Dec 1620 (I'm not clear on this date - this is in a legal document and it's very convoluted) Page 259 - Shows Lawrence Hulett transported by Teague Floyne 1 August 1652 The index also shows references for him on Pages 349 & 544 but I cannot find them - I've found the index to C&P is not accurate. Hope this helps.
