Bill was brother to my G-Grandfather, George Jenkins who was married to Ida Bell "Salyer" Jenkins. md Nov 19 1894 Wise Co VA. Hes 36y, shes 24y. Hes a lawyer. On the 21st day of November 1894, William Jenkins married Eugenia Smithers at Dorchester, Wise County, Virginia, by G. W. Kilgore, a Baptist Minister. She was the daughter of **L. M. & E. Smithers** of Franklin County, Virginia. Eugenia was born July 10, 1870 at Rocky Mount, Virginia, Franklin County. Eugene Smithers Parents were: L.M. Smithers and Mother was E. Smithers Their children are: Gladys Jenkins, who passed as a baby, Gentry Jenkins,who is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, Richard James Jenkins, buried in Highland Cemetery, Norton VA., 1898-1938 Margaret (Willie) Jenkins who is also buried at Highland Cemetery. The following can not be proven that a certain Coal Company hired a man to kill William Jenkins. Some stories related by older citizens, said that Mr. John Wampler met upon the streets of Norton with William Jenkins and SHOT HIM. Mr. William Jenkins lived several days and Died February 11, 1900. The exact date of the shooting is not known. Mr. Jenkins was buried in the Highland Cemetery, Norton, Virginia. In Criminal Book 15 Page 72 February 3, 1900, the Commonwealth indicted John Wampler in Attempt to kill. In Criminal Book 15 Page 149, May 9, 1900 JOHN WAMPLER VS COMMONWEALTH, kind of action: (1) YEAR in PEN for MURDER). On the same day in Criminal Book 15, Page 150, kind of action: MURDER INDICTMENT. (DISMISSED). In Criminal Book 15 Page 150 one day later on May 10, 1900: JOHN WAMPLER VS COMMONWEALTH- kind of action: INDICTMENT IN MURDER, (1 YEAR IN PEN). No transcript of this trial can be found in the Wise County Court House. No Criminal Book 15 can be found to give us more information about this trial. ANOTHER SHORT STORY ABOUT: William, John and George Jenkins Three fiery little high spirited Welchman, Billy, John, George Jenkins, came in a van of the in rush resulting for the railroad construction, and their coming meant much to this area. Billy Jenkins was one of the very first if not the first Mayor of Norton. He was a rising young Lawyer, when shot and killed by Mr. John Wampler, near the tennis court. I (Allen P. Snodgrass) happened to be in town the evening he was killed, and helped carry him to his home. After the death in 1900 of William Jenkins, the Norton Land and Development Company on October 2, 1901 deeded to Eugenia Jenkins and her children, Gentry Jenkins, Gladys Jenkins, Richard Jenkins, James Jenkins, and Willie M. (Margaret 'Willie') Jenkins, for five dollars. " The Norton Land and Development Company Doth grant unto the said Eugenia Jenkins for life or until she shall again marry, in the event of either her death or second marriage, to her children. Gentry Jenkins, Gladys Jenkins, Richard Jenkins, James Jenkins, and Willie M. (Margaret Willie) Jenkins or the survivors of them, share and share alike Lot 36 Block 11 Plat 1". On August 28, 1923, Eugenia Jenkins, deeded the above lots to P. W. Crockford, J. R. Cole, and J. L. Camblos, Trustees of All Saints Church of the Diocese of Southwestern VA of the protestant Episcopal Church in the United State of America. Eugenia Jenkins had earlier land in Block 97 in 1913. There is where she lived until her death in 1946. How long the two story house on Lot 36 Block 11 stood is not known to this writer. Was it there when Eugenia Jenkins sold it to the All Saints Church in 1923? Richard James Jenkins Stone located in the Highland Cemetery, Norton, VA. He was the son of William Jenkins and Eugenia "Smithers" Jenkins. William Jenkins was my G-Grandfathers brother, George Jenkins. Richard James Jenkins I, the son of William Jenkins and Eugenia "Smithers" Jenkins had son Richard James Jenkins II. Sarah Katherine (Katie) "Countiss" Jenkins parents were: Alexander Martin Countiss b. 5-17-1872, Wise County, VA., D. Aft. 1900, Huron County, MI. (Mother) Ethlinda Viola "Barbe" Countiss b. 4-16-1876, Scott County, VA. Sarah Katie "Countiss" md Albert Jenkins, her second husband. Albert is the newphew of my G-Grandfather, George Jenkins. Albert's father was Thomas Jenkins who remained in Wales.
