    1. [VAROOTS] Lee, Thompson
    2. James Lee served "at sea" in the Revolutionary War, He married his first cousin, Mary Lee. Unfortunately, their birth and death dates are unknown to me. I have the NARA records showing that Mary Lee applied for a widow's pension, based on his service. There was much correspondence and many delays in processing this application because Mary, in her old age, wasn't able to give the name of the ship he served on, the name of his commanding officer, or the dates of his enlistment or discharge. She did know that he and the rest of his crew had been taken prisoner by the British, but released in a prisoner exchange at the end of the war. Mary Lee had known James Lee, from childhood, before the war, because they were cousins, but they were not married until after the war. Their daughter, Sithy/ Sintha/Syntha Lee, married John Thompson in 1810. I have documented proof of this. Their first born was Andrew J. Thompson, my gr gr grandfather. Hr was born in Virginia, but the family migrated to Ohio, where he married Eliza McIntire in 1833. I have a copy of their marriage certificate. My guess is that both James Lee and John Thompson died in Virginia, but there are records that show that both Mary Lee and Sithy Lee Thompson moved with their children and lived to old age. There is a legend that has been passed down in my family that "one of our ancestors was a cousin of General Robert E. Lee." I can recall hearing my grandfather tell of this, when I was a child, about 65 years ago. I have since met cousins who also descended from the same gr grandparents and who have said that they had been told this same family legend when they were children. I've searched General Lee's on line pedigree but I haven't been able to find a link. The Lees had a large family tree and this connection, if it does exist, might be up a few generations. This is a mystery I'd like to solve someday. I hope someone will recognize these names and be able to help me break through these "brick wall."
