All should remember that there was no native stone suitable for headstones (grave markers) in the Tidewater areas of VA, NC, SC and south. So it was that in the early days when transportation of freight was most lacking, only those with the means or money for the transportation of rock from other regions could have other than a piece of fieldstone or debris from river beds with which to mark graves. Otherwise, either no marker was placed or the name and other data concerning the deceased was painted upon or burned into a piece of wood; those, now LONG turned to dust.
