Unfortunately 1898 was during that time that Virginia did not require birth or death records be kept. However you can contact the City of Radford and surrounding counties to see if they had records anyway. Your best bet may be a newspaper. Try contacting the current newspapers in the Radford area and see if they were in business at that time or perhaps know the names of the newspapers at that time. If the newspapers do not have archives, contact the Virginia State Library - they have a large collection of old newspapers on microfilm. Since you know where he is buried, you can also contact that cemetery and see if they have records. They may be able to give you the name of the funeral home who may also have old records. Good luck!
