Barb - I'm wondering if the confusion is because of the origin of West Virginia. Maybe it would help unravel things to know that Clarksburg was in Virginia until the Civil War. After the war, West Virginia was formed out of land which was originally part of Virginia. Therefore, the dates are important. Virginia used to be one huge area - extending up to Canada and out to the Pacific Ocean. I guess most of us can claim to b Virginians in that way. Hmmm.
