All should remember that there are millions of documents, Civil War mementos, tin and other type photos, and relics from all eras of the past. Most are not expensive (or should not be), yet some are almost priceless. Go to the auction, buy what you can afford, but do not plan on such as Lee's or Custer's signatures, anything signed by a Founder/Patriot, newspapers of great historical events, or such as a Civil War Officers' commission or a deed for a slave. That said, if the auction is by reputable folks, there should be many documents that reveal activities of the common man and woman, and of those, 18th and 19th Century materials are PLENTIFUL. I have collected such unimportant materials for 50 years, spent very little, and enjoy every one of those. Many have appeared here, and all students enjoy even the very inexpensive ones. Paul
