Greetings Folk's - I know I most likely will not be able to locate the exact spot my hdpth's resided on ... but on my fast approaching genealogical trip through VA, NC and SC [Nov. 6th to the 18th] ... I would like to get some snap shots of the general area :) does anyone here, know from these abbreviated transcription ... where "in general" these locations might be found by todays landmarks :) from the Isle of Wight Co., VA Deeds 1750-1782, by W. L. Hopkins, I came across the following deed abstracts ... both indicated to be in the IoW deed book 8, 1747-1752 pg. 160 - 1 Aug. 1748... Rec: 6 Jun 1751 James Mackleney I am wondering if there is a way to tell where the "general area" of these two parcels might be located in the present day ? yes I realize or at least I believe there might not be an exact location that we could point to ... that is why I said "general area" :) not sure if the following deeds dovetail into this, and or give additional info ... both of these indicated to be in the IoW deed book 12, 1765-1772, mention Henry Hedgpeth as witness in one, and then within the description of what appears to be part of the same parcel that he was a witness of in the earlier transaction of ... pg. 187 - 30 Nar 1767... You quite likely have named enough general boundaries in both counties to come quite close to those ancient homesites. There are a number of ways to accomplish what you wish to do. The easiest would be to FIRST gain a GOOD map of the counties, and then visit the county surveyor's offices in, first, IofW (in the town of IofW), and then in Edgecombe (at Tarboro). Ask those folks to direct you to the approximate area. After you have learned something of the locations, you will want to gain the USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangles of those areas. Were I you, I would call ahead in order to know that on the day you propose to visit, the surveyors will be there and have a few minutes to assist you, since in smaller counties most of such people are also otherwise employed. Ken: Here is what I did. First, go to http://historical-county.newberry.org/website/Virginia/viewer.htm type in 1748, compare it to 2005, tells you that IoW at that time was west of Nansamond County and covered present day IoW, plus present day Southampton and Franklin (IC), with, it looks like, Nansamond being renamed Suffolk. Blackwater River divides current Southampton Co. from IoW, running from the Suffolk/Southampton line to Surry County. Much of it appears to be a swamp. But, of course, in 1748, it would have all been in IoW. So, the "north side of main Blackwater Swamp adjoining the line between Isle of Wight and Nansamond County" would put the site probably somewhere around present day Franklin, which is close to the then Nansamond line. There are some "industrial ponds" at the juncture of the counties, but plenty of other swamps around as well. "150 acres on Beaverdam Branch" -- interestingly, there is a Beaverdam Swamp just east of Franklin. There was a "Beaverdam Church" in the GNIS: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=122:1:2924986233901329782 So, my best guess is that the area around Franklin is your best bet. I'd stay away from the "industrial ponds" <G>, but I'd say any of the back roads out 58/258 towards Carswell would do it for you. I went through this adventure finding some pretty well sited land in Buckingham County, and frankly, it all looks pretty much the same, once you get out of town <G>. By the way, I highly recommend what Kenny is doing. Some of these areas are so "gone back", with an occasional patch of cleared land, that they probably resemble what our ancestors had to deal with. The trees may be only 60 inches in diameter, instead of 90, but the underbrush and such are pretty overwhelming. I had a bit of a time trying to connect these to the Library of Virginia patents, but did find a few you might be interested in: http://ajax.lva.lib.va.us/F/QU78V9MVYAV793BDV23TYVRRCSA3HKU937SFXECKLGD3V6YFU2-00432?func=file&file_name=f ind-b Title Hedgpah, John, Sr. Publication 29 October 1696.
