Several have asked about research of Free Blacks. Here is an article that some may find interesting: http://americancivilwar.com/authors/black_slaveowners.htm Genealogy without documentation is nothing. Paul Drake JD Genealogist & Author <www.DrakesBooks.com>
Paul, as a person who's ancestors were unlucky enough to have been slaves-for-life, I wonder what Robert E. Lee was smoking and drinking when he wrote that letter to his wife. It is quite a stretch to decide that black people being made slaves is benificial enough to the blacks to justify holding them in slavery. The blacks didn't get to vote on it. Those black slave owners? You will find their kind everyere. They did all they could to deny the fact that they were only a short distance, possibly one state away from being subject to being a slave themselves. Wouldn't that have been nice?
