In colonial Virginia, parishes and their boundaries were stablished (and altered) by acts of the General Assembly. After 16 January 1786 the General Assembly passed Thomas Jefferson's Bill or Establishing Religious Freedom, and while parishes continued to exist, hose were no longer units of state government. The county is listed first, ollowed by the parish(es) that at one time or another were considered as in hole or in part within the boundaries of that county.
