Liz, I have the Eighth Edition of "The Handybook For Genealogists" which I received about 1997. I have found this book to be very useful. It gives a brief history of each State, when it was started, the counties are also listed and tells what their mother counties are; also have data on what type of records they have and lost. Also has individual maps of the State with the existing counties. Also has the migration trails maps included. The only problem that exists for me today; the phone numbers to the courthouses that they listed when my book was published are changing; but the addresses are still pretty close.
