But whoever you do research through, you can still do a search through Google.com They are a search engine just like Ask.com is. I just went to Google and put in Jamestown, VA 1607 and got a wealth of information including things that were written at the time. I suspect if you dig deep enough you will come up with the names of the original settlers. My God provides my every need according to His riches in glory. Hi Peggy. My ancestor, John CLAY, came to Jamestown in 1612/13 on the Treasurer. He became an Ancient Planter in 1617. My line is very well documented to him. Best regards, Julius (Tim) Spradling -----Original Message----- From: Madyas@aol.com To: VAROOTS@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, 5 May 2007 1:04 PM Subject: [VAROOTS] new mailing list for Jamestown settlers/ancestors Good morning, If anyone is interested, I've just created a new discussion list/message board for those researching their ancestors who were among the original settlers who sailed to Jamestown, Virginia, in the early 1600s. The group focuses on genealogy but includes history as well. It is a no flame, no spam, family-oriented group where researchers can meet others who also have ancestors who lived in that area at the time. My ancestor is Captain Thomas Graves who sailed from England and arrived with the 'second supply' at Jamestown, in 1608. There are many Graves descendants today who are doing research on this line. I would love to learn more about some of the other settlers who were on the three original voyages to Jamestown....men like Captain John Smith and others, who have living descendants doing those genealogies. Research topics also include descendants of these early settlers, and those who might be trying to find their ancestral connection to Jamestown, are very welcome also. This new group is 'JamestownVirginiaSettlers' at Yahoo Groups. It has a home page which has some wonderful functions such as archived messages, members list, photos, files, database, links, and the option of receiving messages as individual emails, digest mode, or no mail mode where you can read the posts from the home page. It is free to subscribe, but you must first register with Yahoo Groups by creating a user name and password. Membership requires moderator-approval, to discourage spammers. This is an informal, not-so-academic group and beginner researchers as well as advanced genealogists and historians are welcome. No post is too trivial as long as it is reasonably within the group description or if it might be of interest to other group members. You can share old photos of your ancestors, post your lines, tell stories or anecdotes about your early families, or post queries which others may be able to answer. I was born in Virginia and live near Cape Henry where the original three ships made landing in 1607. This seems like the best time to start up this group, in time for Jamestown's 400th anniversary celebration. The Queen visited Jamestown/Williamsburg yesterday, and last week a reenactment was held on the beach at Cape Henry, of the first landing, with replicas of the three ships. Since Yahoo Groups allow attachments in emails, I hope to be able to forward some of the photo-articles which seem to be published daily in my local newspaper, about Jamestown's history and events being held to mark its 400 year past. Hello, I need a copy of a will or estate settlement for a John Day Sr. of Hanover Co. whose death was reported in a Richmond newspaper on 2 Apr 1804. Are the wills/estate settlements for Hanover extant for this time period? Where would it be located? Is it on-line? Has it been abstracted? Have they been published? Please help. I think I'm getting a little closer to solving a riddle. Thanks, Sharon Bryant
In my quest to put more black history up on the norfolk and pac sites, I found some info about the "first" black churches that i will be putting up on the sites in the next few days. one book i found is called Free Blacks in Norfolk Virginia 1790-1860 by tommy l. bogger. i uploaded the pages containing a list of free blacks and it covers all over va not just norfolk and pac. and i will be adding other info as time progresses. This seems to be the best book i have found so far on this subject...... I also ran into a lady with the virginia beach historical society today and she's going to be having some people from portsmouth contact me to help me with my search! thanks! "Manumit" is a noun. "Manumitters" is the plural of that noun that means folks who manumit (the verb form); that is, grant freedom from the obligations and duties of service to others who have legal or physical control and power over the manumitted person. The courts have so defined the words. The terms are usually used to describe the actions of "owners" who have freed their slaves from duties and bondage. The too, I have seen the term employed when speaking of manumission by act of government. I occasionally also have seen the word used in describing the release from any obligations that an indentured servant might have to his/her Master/Mistress. You don't say what records you have searched. Naturalizations were usually recorded in the Order or minute books. If the person had applied for Naturalization in a different county or even a different state, it will say so when citizenship is granted. The Library of Virginia has an excellend research guide on searching for Naturalization records at it's website at this url: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/notes/rn12_natural1776.pdf Good luck, Pat Baber Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
