Peggy - you forgot to tell them ... it's highly suggested that one selects to keeps their "yahoo profile" PRIVATE ... no matter how much info they elect to provide in it :) that will keep the spammers / smut messages "girls of the evening and what not" from contacting you ... that way only subscriber's of which ever yahoogroup one joins, are the only ones that can view anothers profile within the same group :) Of the 7 yahoogroups that I am the owner/moderator of ... I suggest that everyone to set up a "yahoo profile" ... in one group we have over 1,300 members and I can't tell you how many times we get people who say they can't access the groups archive of messages and/or other important items listed in the left hand column of the groups homepage ... yep without the yahoo profile set up ... you won't be able to access those things "/ For those that I might have side tracked in my earlier posting to help Pat ... saying yahoo.com ... it should be "groups [dot] yahoo [dot] com" then click on the "Sign In" to access the log-in screen :) Ken - hdpth-DNA

I own/moderate about 12 Yahoo Groups and I'm a member in about 20, and I thought that was frightening enough! I'm glad you told us that, tkemp; now I don't feel as out of control as I did......ha! No, you do NOT need a Yahoo profile to join the mailing list for any Yahoo Groups. You only need a Yahoo profile if you want access to all the extra's on the groups website such as files, pictures, etc. * I subscribed to my first Yahoo Group when they first came out, and had a terrible time registering successfully. I just wanted to add that (at least for me) I did get the profile but managed to get it without having to fill in all the personal information; the only data on mine is my user name which is shown anyway, and the sex which doesn't matter because I sign my posts Peggy. You could always experiment and see if you can do the same kind of "blank" profile and delete it if not. * A word about the Yahoo Groups' extras....to me, they are the main attraction to Yahoo Groups.....the photos, message archives, files, databases, links, members list, etc. are what make the Yahoo Groups so useful and enjoyable. In the JamestownVirginiaSettlers group, I just uploaded photos that were taken at last week's reenactment of the Jamestown settlers' first landing on the beach at Cape Henry. The Links section has all kinds of links to Jamestown-related sites, Rootsweb-VA sites, etc. and the Database section has a place where members can put the name of their Jamestown ancestor, year of arrival, and researcher name. So, I think all the home page functions for that Yahoo Group are what makes it interactive and a good resource for research. * Once I got successfully registered with Yahoo Groups, I was able to click on to "My Groups"....a very useful function that lists all the names of the Yahoo Groups that you are subscribed to, and the list includes the photo of the groups' home pages, if a cover photo has been put on them. When I am skimming down the list of all the groups I belong to, it's actually easier for me to find the groups by looking for their home page photo. I use AOL and my home page includes a tool bar where I have put an icon for Yahoo and I just click on to that to get to my Yahoo Groups "My Groups" page...it's so easy! As an owner/moderator of around 30 Yahoo lists, and member of over 100, I must say that everyone is making this hard on themselves. No, you do NOT need a Yahoo profile to join the mailing list for any Yahoo Groups. You only need a Yahoo profile if you want access to all the extra's on the groups website such as files, pictures, etc. To subscribe to the mailing llist only the Yahoo profile is not needed. Simply send an email to JamestownVirginiaSettlers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com from the email address you want subscribed. Yahoo will send you a confirmation email containing a link to a subscription page. This page will be for joining the Yahoo Group, which will require a Yahoo profile and will give you a Yahoo address, but if you do not want this and only want to be on the email list look for the link at the very bottom of the page saying, "As an alternate option, you may *join the mailing list instead*." This link will allow you to join the mailing list with no Yahoo account or profile. I signed up using my aol account, but the signup screen assigned me the email address of patkram@yahoo.com. So I'm wondering....does that just show up on my aol account email that I used to sign up, or do I have to go to another site to get to it? Just trying to figure it all out. Thanks for any suggestion. Pat Lyle Kramer ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

I am a moderator of a few yahoogroups :) and I know that in your "yahoo profile" you can specify where you want your mail to go to ... after you log-in at yahoo.com, click on "my account" and from there you can see where your mail is directed to "currently" ... click on the "edit" next to "member information" and you can change it "if" you desire :) but then as Nova has pointed out ... why would yahoo want to spam themselves ... LOL that's providing that you never use that yahoo address in any messages posted anywhere and/or don't post it on any personal web site :) they can't block all spam otherwise there could be message you "should have" received and did not ... but then how would one know if that was happening "/ Ken - hdpth-DNA My E-mail God, provides me all that I can bare and then some ... just to test me :) > [Original Message] > From: Emaress Nova <emaress_nova@yahoo.com> > To: <varoots@rootsweb.com> > Date: 5/5/2007 10:19:27 PM > Subject: Re: [VAROOTS] new mailing list for Jamestown settlers/ancestors > > for AOL mail you sign on to AOL, and for Yahoo > mail you sign into Yahoo. Hi....jumped through the hoops to get into your group through Yahoo. They assigned me a yahoo account. Now, the question is, since I subscribe to aol, how do I get my messages from yahoo? for AOL mail you sign on to AOL, and for Yahoo mail you sign into Yahoo. Sometimes there are real advantages to doing it that way too. All my incoming genealogy mail comes to Yahoo - everything else goes to my Myway account. Keps things all sorted out - and no spam in Yahoo. Only Vol 1 and 2 are out now thru "P" but Vol 3 is due this year. Probably available at the local library. * I wish I had those books. Another source for them is Amazon but a hefty price. In the meantime, I just went to Ancestry.com and went to the "immigration" records section from the 1500s+, and typed in 'Jamestown Virginia' and then the dates 1607-1620 (didn't put in a surname) and it turned up 245 names, with records submitted from various sources. You have to have a subscription, though, to view the records. Ancestry is always running an offer for a free, 2 week trial, though.
