Thank you so much for you offer!!! I would love it if you would look up someone for me: John Sturdivant I have found three Johns who served in the Revolutionary War. I would like to understand their relationships and determine which is our ancestor. There are three Johns in our line from Prince Goerge County Va - John 1695-1755 married Mary their son, John Sturdivant: born 1719 Prince George County, VA - died 25 Aug 1793 Prince George County, VA married Anna Thompson their son: John Sturdivant 1756 Prince George Co, VA - 1795 This John is the brother of our ancestor, Mary Eppes Sturdivant. There is a John Sr and a John Jr in the Revolutioanry War records -- I think the middle John is John Sr. I am hoping the records you have will have family members notes to help determine who is who! Now - another helpful record would be those of Joel Sturdivant. But of course, there are two Joel Sturdivants in this family! One is the brother of the middle John - the one we think is John Senior. The other is the brother of the last John - the one we think is John Jr and the brother of our Mary Eppes Strudivant. There is a Revolutionary War Hero named Joel Sturdivant - perhaps your records will have more family member data to help identify hwo he relateds to the above people. Do any of your records for John or Joel Sturdivant list family members? Parents, spouses, children??? Thank you SO MUCH for your help. I hope to return the favor someday... Henry Randall Brown was born January 4, 1909; and, if my memory is not too far off, I believe that he died approximately 1961. Henry Randall Brown was the son of Simon Henry Brown (DOB June 1, 1863 and DOD August 19, 1935). Simon Henry Brown married Devalsco Eugenia Hargrove, daughter of Daniel Jackson and Elizabeth Thomas Hargrove, on December 1, 1891. Last week I was going through some old pictures and came across a folder with the heading of "The Browne Family of Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama -- Rock Hill, S.C. July 25, 1956." It begins with, "Full credit for this work is given to Col. Woolsey Finnell of Tuscaloosa, Ala., who spent many years and much money collecting the data for it, to his family, and especially to his daughter, Mrs. Nubia Livingston, who did the major part of the correspondence, the assimilating of this material, and typing it." (NOTE: The information in the first paragraph of this message regarding Henry Randall Brown's parents, date of birth and date of marriage to Annie Laurie Strickland is also taken from the information prepared and in the folder giving credit to research of Col. Woolsey Finnell and his family and daughter, Mrs. Nubia Livingston.) I, Carolyn Strickland Smalley, take no credit whatsoever for any work and information provided and know and realize that all credit is to be given as stated above to Col. Woolsey Finnell of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and to his family and daughter, Mrs. Nubia Livingston. I do not know, nor am I familiar with Col. Finnell or Mrs. Livingston or any of their family. Today, June 22, 2007, I have spoken on the phone with Woolsey Finnell, III. Mr. Finnell has kindly given his permission for this information to be provided here to anyone who may be interested in the information herein. I sincerely hope that I have not made any mistakes and should anyone find any errors I have made, please let me know. So, in your searching, please forgive any errors that I have made in re-typing the information. Carolyn Strickland Smalley

    3. Liz, I have the Eighth Edition of "The Handybook For Genealogists" which I received about 1997. I have found this book to be very useful. It gives a brief history of each State, when it was started, the counties are also listed and tells what their mother counties are; also have data on what type of records they have and lost. Also has individual maps of the State with the existing counties. Also has the migration trails maps included. The only problem that exists for me today; the phone numbers to the courthouses that they listed when my book was published are changing; but the addresses are still pretty close. 1. [VAROOTS] lassiter family research
    2. A very kind person who wishes to be nameless sent me the following information, that i will put up on the norfolk site asap. but i know there is someone on the lists who does lassiter research but i forget who. so here it is. This kind person did a lot of work. later kristina ps. still putting up obits, _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com) pss. my computer is having a hard time with the pictures (dial up and all) Kristina, I was told about this cemetery and thought you might want the information for the Norfolk County, Virginia, GenWeb page. These tombstones are located immediately next to a road currently under construction which will serve a commercial center west of I-664 & north of Portsmouth Boulevard, linking the new commercial development with Lowes, which is already occupied. The road parallels Portsmouth Boulevard toward to back/north part of the lots. When I took the pictures, I was standing just off the curb. As you can see, a drainage pond is on the other side of the markers. There are two tombstones which are intact and three lying on the ground between them. In addition, two foot markers are also on the ground. My first photo DSCNO720 shows the stone on the east/left side of the site and reads as follows: Harriett A. wife of James Lassiter born April 23, 1838 died December 18, 1888 My second photo DSCNO721 shows three markers which are lying on the ground. They all are for young daughters of this couple. The first one reads as follows: Virginia Daughter of Jas. & Harriet Lassitor BORN May 30, 1871 DIED July 4, 1873 (Yes, the spelling of the surname is different from that on the parents; and Harriet's name is spelled with two "t's" on her stone but not on the others. .) My third photo DSCNO722 shows the other two stones, as well as the previous one. They read as follows: Annie E. daughter of Jas. & Harriet Lassitor born June 13, 186? died Sept 10, 186? This stone is in poor condition and I was unable to read the last number on the dates. The third stone reads as follows: Ida O daughter of Jas. & Harriet Lassitor Born Jan 5, 1869 Died Aug. 10, 1872 My fourth photo shows the two footstones, which are lying next to the children's headstones and to the left of the father's stone. The first one says "J. L." and the second on says " A.E.L." My fifth photo DSCNO724 shows the last stone, which is intact. Someone has placed an American flag next to this gravestone. It reads as follows: In memory of Our Father JAMES LASSITER Born March 7, 1831 Died August 28, 1905 My sixth photo DSCNO725 shows enough of the two intact stones that you can see how they are arranged. Kristina, I do not know anything about this family personally. I was able to find them in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Norfolk County and they had at least 4 sons in addition to the daughters who died. The 1880 census page is Virginia, Norfolk Co., Bowers Hill, ED66 HH220. >From the 1870 census for Virginia, Norfolk County, Western Branch twp, V932, the enumerator lists William J. Lassiter 32, farmer, born in North Carolina; also Harriet 30 and 5 Lassiter Children. Also, in a very unusual entry, the occupation of another member of the household named Eugene (?) Jones is "lives with Brother in law." Thus, Harriet's maiden name appears to be Jones. In addition, James is listed as "William J" and next door to this family is Matilda Lassiter, 66, and Jane Lassiter 28. William J(ames) Lassiter and Matilda Lassiter were born in North Carolina; everyone else was born in Virginia. Finally the youngest child in the William J and Harriet Lassiter family is Ida J age 4 months, born in January. This child's stone was one of the ones I photographed. In the 1860 census, Virginia, Nansemond County, Lower parish, Visit 40, the enumerator lists William J Lassiter, age 25, farmer, Harriet A, 22, and two other Lassiter girls, only one of the age to be Harriet's child; also a Black female. None have occupations except William J. Matilda and Benjamin Lassiter also live in Nansemond county with several others named Lassiter and of an age to be children of this couple. In 1850 on page 160, Visit 543, the enumerator lists Benja. Lassiter, Matilda Lassiter, and 10 Lassiter children including William age 15. This family is very likely William James Lassiter's parents and siblings. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    2. This sounds like an excellent book and one I'd also like to have, but don't forget there were dozens of changes after 1895 and many counties disappeared into cities in more recent years. This is a MUST book for anyone trying to do Early Virginia research. One needs to READ the whole book, not just look at the maps. Virginia was the "mother" of West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and parts of Michigan and Wisconsin. Also, see page 5, included there are partly or wholly all of the current states of North Carolina, South Carolina as well as a small part of Alabama and Florida. It is very complicated topic.
