I have received several emails over the last month, asking about "firsts" and having no clue, i referred people to the library, but either they did not live in the state or they did not have time to go fishing around the library. So while i was in there i went digging myself. so my answers could not be found in the PRINT books. but i did stumble upon the answers in the very first ORDER book for PAC. starts around MAY-JUNE 1691, there are some references to 1642 but for my purposes i'm starting with june 1691. now i'm working with a handwritten book and it's huge, 3 feet long by 2 feet wide and several inches thick. it took several trys at the copier to get the page reduced enough to fit on an 8 x 11 piece of paper, therefore making smaller print even smaller. so anyway, i copied a few pages and thought i'd share a little, now if you see your ancestors name and it's where i ???? or **** help would be appreciated. feel free to ask questions. also i'm in the middle of gathering lunenburg wills, i currently have 1833-1851 also i am currently in the middle of gathering albemarle marriages? need to organize. ok for the firsts: ********* not a clue in the world what that word is, help would be appreciated. ??????? can't read last name, please if known, verify spelling, thanks...... Discussion on another list has focused on whether or not Richard Rogers of Northumberland Co. VA, son of Capt. John Rogers and brother of William Rogers ( who married Elizabeth Dale), had more than one wife. His only known wife was Jane Presley, b. June 1664 in Northumberland Co. VA to Peter Presley, according St. Stephen's Parish register. She later remarried to Christopher Neale ca 1698. But she seems too young to have been the mother of all of his children - son John, the earliest one recorded in the St. Stephen's register, was born in Dec 1676. Richard Rogers' will was presented for probate on 18 Aug 1697 by his widow Jane Rogers and Mr. Robert Banks. In 1703, the following action took place in Northumberland Co. - The 20th day of May Anno Dom. 1703. "Upon the Moc'on of Christ'r Neale and Jane his wife a Com'c'on of Adm'c'on is granted them on the Estate of Richard, John and Hannah Rogers the said Janes Children giving Caution for their Due administrac'on on the said Dec'eds Estate According to Law." Source: Northumberland County Virginia, Court Order Book, Part 1 1699-1713), ed. Charles & Virginia Hamrick (Athens, GA: Iberian Publishing Company, 1999), pg. 249. I don't have access to this book to look at it myself, but a transcript was posted by someone who said she saw the actual document as well as read it in the cited source . "... said Dec'eds Estate" seems to be referring to the children named - Richard, John and Hannah Rogers. If the clerk followed typical procedure, the children were named in birth order (or sons in birth order followed by daughters in birth order). This would seem to indicate that son Richard [Jr.] was born before Dec 1676. Even if Richard was born only 9 months prior to his brother John, in March 1676, that would mean that he was conceived about June 1675, when his supposed mother Jane had just turned 11. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. Thus, I do believe that Jane was probably Richard's second wife. So, my questions - 1. Does anyone know if Richard Rogers' will itself survives? Does anyone have a transcription of it? There has been some question about which of his children are actually named in his will. 2. Does anyone know of deeds or other records that mention Richard Rogers and his wife about 1676 or earlier? 3. Am I interpreting the 1703 action correctly? Is there any proof that these children were not dead in 1703? There was a Mr. Richard Rogers in Northumberland Co. in Dec. 1693 - "In the County Levy Dec. 21, 1693, Burgess charges were allowed the following: Mr. Richard Rogers, Mr. Richard Flynt, Capt. Wm. Lee, Mr. Cuthbert Span, Jr. Jno. Downing & Capt. Wm. Jones." Source: an article about Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay, Northumberland Co. VA in "William and Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine" V. 23:200 (Jan. 1915). Who was he? Could he have been the above Richard Rogers [Jr.]? I appreciate any help. This isn't my family, this is just for my own intellectual curiosity and maybe to set the record straight. Vickie Elam White
Hi, Doug. I am rather certain that your man meant Malvern Hill, the very well-known battlefield of the Civil War, and part of the "Seven Days Battle". You will find it on any map of Virginia east and a tad south of Richmond. For Holt's Forge, read the July 10th entry at http://www.connecticutsar.org/articles/diary.htmLook You might also want to look at Plate cxxxvii of the "War Of The Rebellion", which records appear in the entirety on the net. Go to google and search that title, for which there are myriad entries. Then go to "Atlas" of that website, then to the map at the Plate shown. HI, Seeking information on James H. Jones born about 1811 in Virgina/North Carolina; married Martha Wadkins/Watkins (exact spelling unknown), born about 1809 in Virgina/North Carolina. They both died in Lincoln County, Arkansas, him about 1865, her 1888. Their first two children were William born 1833 in Virginia/North Carolina, and (2) Sarah born 1835. Later they moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee and had several more children. In 1859 they moved to Arkansas County, Arkansas, then the boundaries changed placing them in Lincoln County. Hi All, I sincerely apologize for this mixup. It appeared in BOTH tax list webpages. I made the mistake in the "A" webpage and then copied it to the "B" webpage. I now have it corrected in both webpages and these have been uploaded to our website. Sorry for this error and any inconvenience it has caused. Hi All, We do a lot of work using old tax lists to reconstruct the missing 1790 and 1800 Virginia Censuses. But did you realize there are 16 MISSING counties in the 1810 Census (according to the LVA)? Halifax is one of those missing counties. The first free sample is the 1810 Halifax Personal Property Tax List A. The second free sample is the 1810 Halifax Personal Property Tax List B. These are a nice substitute for the missing census.
