    1. RE: [VAROOTS] Kirbys in VA
    2. Rex Kirby
    3. Hope, Thanks for your kind offer. If you don't mind I will briefly work backwards from my great grandfather. He was Richard Monroe Kirby, br Jan 25, 1858 in Spartanburg, SC, d. 1935 Smith Co, TX. His father was Ransom Kirby, br Jan 1835 in Spartanburg, SC (I think) d, unk in unk, bur, unk. Note: I have located five separate Ransom Kirbys but have been unable to figure out what happened to mine. Ransom's wife was Margaret "Peggy" Garner. Don't know anything about her. Ransom's father was Jacob Kirby, b Feb 27, 1803, not sure where, d. Mar 14, 1880 Spartanburg area, SC. bur in the old Porter Cemetery, near Thicketty Creek. Jacob was married to Patsy Lipscomb, dau of David Lipscomb and Katherine Smith. Not sure when or where she was born but she died June 18, 1854 in Spartanburg Co, SC. Have not located her grave, if marked. Jacob's father was John Kirby b 1745 Halifax Co, VA and believed to have died after 1807 in Union Co, SC. His wife was Jemima Bolling, br abt 1744 in VA. Jemima was dau of Alexander Bolling and Unk. No further information. John Kirby's dad was John Kerby, Sr. br July 19 1693 in Charles Parish, Pittsylvania Co, VA, d. Nov 19, 1772 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He was married to Joanna Owens, b abt 1713, d, 1795, dau of William Owens and Lydia Lansford. No further information. Do not know where John Kirby Sr, Joanna or her folks are buried. John Kerby Sr's dad was Robert Kerby, b Jan 5 1661 or 1662 in New Pocoson, York Co, VA. He died April 25, 1727 in Charles Parish, York Co, VA. Robert was married twice: (1) Mary Curson in York Co, VA. She is believed to have died in 1686 or 1687. (2) Katherine Clark Thompkins, br about 1672 in what is now Patrick Co, VA, d. Apr 25, 1727 Charles Parish, York Co, VA. Robert Kerby's father may have been Thomas Kerby (III ?) and he may be the one listed in Cavaliers and Pioneers as having received a land grant in 1642 in VA. Not sure if same person. I have the names and birthdates of the 13 children of Robert and Katherine, all believed to have been born in VA if those names might be helpful. I will appreciate any information on any of these families. 2. > Sue, having followed some of the discussion about living people who's name appear on genealogy registers and forums, I agree often times a lot of us get uptight about things such as this. the federal, state and local governments, not to mention credit agencies, department stores and of course our court houses, motor vehicle departments, telephone companies, and municipal utility companies have reams of this sort of information and it is under the public domain, which means anyone who asks for it can access it. Bottom line is someone wants to ruin your credit he, or she is not going bother going through genealogy lists because that information is already available and at hand. > From: Armndcvr@cs.com > Date: 2003/06/22 Sun PM 02:06:23 EDT > To: VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [VAROOTS] Help! We all have a right to our feelings. This lady is right in some ways and so are you. However, I have seen that most living relatives on the family trees are listed just as living with a last name and I feel this lady has a right to the same curtesy. I am sorry if I have upset you. I wish you all the luck and prosperity I have had this week in my search. Some of my emails to people who have some of me family on the family trees has finally paid off. So my wish is not out of anything more then true hope for you to succeed in your search. Have a Great Week Sue

    3. I may have missed a message or two but "good ammunition" for what? Try typing in your phone number in Google and see what you get. Granted, for genealogy purposes most of us are researching a lot further back than the information complained about. And I have encountered the "living" notation for many individuals whom I know to be deceased. I would certainly agree that personal identifying information needs to be left to all the credit agencies rather than spread all over the internet on genealogy and/or family sites. I for one do not have the answer. It's frustrating both ways so my FTM reports seem to have more Unknowns than anything else. In the meantime, maybe someone on this board is also researching the Kirbys who were in VA in the mid 1600s and early 1700s. If so, I would appreciate hearing from you. 2. I agree with you. To much info online is just not good. Have you contacted the person who put it on? I wonder if you could ask someone who is in the Ancestry.com administration. Try as many webmasters as possible and send them the link to the info you are referring to. Maybe they can help you. This may have been an oversight on someones part. I don't think that just because this info was in a book that it is right to be online. More people have access to it online. What sort of a book was it in? Sue

    3. I think that's being a bit overly paranoid. I mean, like I posted earlier, there are widely available "public" records one could easily access if dishonesty is your goal. Doesn't have to be a genealogy database. And besides, I am sure the bank (or whatever other institution) will give you another password verification question besides mother's maiden name. But that's getting off the track of genealogy. It's the gamble you take. ----- Original Message ----- From: "J Wostal" <jwostal@nbtx.com> To: <VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 21, 2003 5:38 PM Subject: Re: [VAROOTS] Help! The older stuff BEFORE 1900 doesn't bother me, what BOTHERS ME is the fact that she put LIVING PEOPLE names etc on it. Kristina, I would like to say first that when a GEDCOM file is copied from Ancestry.com and it has living ancestors/descendants that they only show the surname and not the first. They replace the first name with "Living" e.g., "Living Smith." Now, not trying to be smart or anything, but if "she" got the info from a "Copyrighted Family History Book" then the info that she put on Ancestry.com is already public to anyone that has the book, right? Now, as for copying the GEDCOM file, just download the GEDCOM file and depending on what genealogy program you are using it should let you convert your GEDCOM file to what ever format your program uses to open the info, e.g., Family Tree Maker will covert the GEDCOM file over to the FTW format and open in that program. Hope this helps answer your questions. BTW, I would not worry about anyone seeing the info on the living relatives, because like I said Ancestry.com will replace the first name with "Living." 3. You can't access the information yourself. You have to contact the person who uploaded the file on the site. Question... does it REALLY matter one way or another? The "current" information came from a published book for anyone and their brother to read and access. Why is it different being on the Internet? They only took what was out there already in the public's hands. You would be surprised just what information is "public" access. Some states have driver's license info open to the public. If you vote your registration is public access which will include your address, dob, ss# (some states), and signature. There are more but those two come to the top of my mind right now... ----- Original Message ----- From: <FRMRNYR@aol.com> To: <VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 21, 2003 2:47 PM Subject: [VAROOTS] Help! If she copied the whole book, then we are talking about 500 people who now have their personal info on the internet, whether they like it or not. thanks Kristina ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    3. Kristina, Have you seen the files? Many times if living descendants are listed they are listed as Living + Surname and that is all. --- FRMRNYR@aol.com wrote: > Does anyone know how to Access those Gedcom > files that people upload to > Ancestry.com? > Someone put CURRENT information on my family on > the ancestry.com gedcom files > and I want it DELETED can anyone help?
