HELP! We'll be leaving for a swing through Virginia on Wednesday (for genealogy purposes) and I need to decide soon if I should include Farmville. Can anyone tell me of any old Baptist churches (1870) that are in or near Farmville AND have cemeteries? I've checked the posted listings at SCVGS and havent found my William C. Davis (died 7/1870). He was Baptist, and may be buried (hopefully with wife Anna, who died ca 1917) in an small cemetery. I can't do much walking, so am hoping that I might be able to call some of these old churches to see if either are there. Please provide me with names of old Baptist Churches--and any info you have. Thanks so much, Frank Dean Arnold, MD
Danville has a most active genealogy society with more than 600 members from all over the country, an excellent library (a large room in the public library) and an excellent journal too. Its name: Piedmont VA.-N.C. Genealogical Society (4 adjoining VA. counties and 3 adjoining N.C. ones) P.O. box 2272 Danville 24541-0272 e-mail: vanccoc@gamewood.net Dues are $15 a year and well worth it for the quarterly, Piedmont Lineages. They have many publications, answer questions and post queries for members. E. Kaspar I have belonged for some years...and I live in ILL.! Conatact the current Danville newspaper and see if they were around at that time. If they were - ask where you can find archives back that far. If they were not - someone there can probably tell you what newspapers were there. You can also try the Danville libraries. The Virginia State Library has a large collection of newspapers too. Contact them and see if they can find anything for you. Godo luck - reading the old newspapers is a wonderful experience. EARLY DOBKINS OCCURRENCES I have been researching my mothers DOBKINS line since about 1989, trying to verify the parents of my ggg-grandfather, Thomas D. DOBKINS. So far, I have not been able to positively identify his parents, even though I have gathered a great deal of information from various sources and references. Several years ago, I compiled basic information into EARLY DOBKINS OCCURRENCES-- http://home.rmci.net/dyingst/earlydob.htm. The original compilation arranged the entries by locality; that is, State and/or Country. Now, I have provided an additional list ordered by Name. My intent here is to share the occurrences and sources for the benefit of DOBKINS researchers; not to make any interpretations or inferences about possible or probable family relationships. I have omitted most occurrences after Thomas moved to MO in 1817 as I am principally interested in tracking down his ancestors in TN and VA and, also, in Great Britain where I think the family line originated. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that might have additional information up to and during the time period covered in the listing that might assist me and others in our research. Donovan

At Genealogy.com there is no Lewis, Richard, L., or L.R. listed with children. There is a Catherine Humphreys listed with her children, among them a Lewis age 12. Just down the page is a John B. with two children but no Lewis. These are the only Humphries of any spelling in Culpeper county. There is a Lewis Humphries in Albermarle, age 39, wife Mary J., 30, and a son William E., 9. Therse are all I could find that may be of some help without more information. Have you seen an index of Culpeper where he is listed in 1860? If so tell me the page number and I will try again.
