hahahaha - original message that started all this said Oakwood Cemetery was on 460 between Bedford and Lynchburg. Looking at map I saw nothing that even resembled what she was asking - so I tried Lynchburg proper. I have come to the conclusion that the only one that may resolve the question is a funeral home that was in business back as far as the last message I sent. For sure they know where cemeteries are! Where are you now Debbie? I live in Pamplin! --- TotFrocks@aol.com wrote: > I just received this message about Oakwood > Cemetery. I just received this message about Oakwood Cemetery. I'm sorry, I didn't make it more clear that I meant all of this is IN Bedford, Virginia that I was talking about. I'm pretty sure about the Longwood Ave. there, and it being off Rt.221. I'm certain of Bedford County Hospital being on Oakwood, since I had my daughter there! BUT, to add to that confusion...I believe they've changed the name of THAT hospital too. This cemetery I'm talking about is very near this Hospital, and the Elks National Home. I do believe it has a connection to them, perhaps involving the cemetery's name change. That's why I mentioned an old map might be helpful, because I believe in this area, even the main roads, like Route 221 have been changed around quite a bit in recent years. Virginia Baptist Hospital (where I was born!) and Oakwood Country Club are both on Rivermont Ave. in Lynchburg. Know both of these places very well too...but had never realized the similarities in names with Bedford before. No wonder some of us have troubles with pieces of our puzzles fitting in the right place! <grin> I'd hoped to help...now am hoping I didn't just add to the confusion by my message. Thank You Emaress Nova for helping me see I needed to make it clear that I was talking about Bedford...where an Oakwood Cemetery really did exist to the best of my knowledge! But since I'm really an Amherst County gal, Well...! : ) Debbie Subj: Re: [VAROOTS] Oakwood Cemetery DOES exist Date: 8/16/03 11:49:14 PM Central Daylight Time From: emaress_nova@yahoo.com (Emaress Nova) Reply-to: <A HREF="mailto:VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com">VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com</A> To: VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com I am looking at a current Lynchburg city map. Greetings Pat, Oakwood Cemetery in Bedford, Virginia does exist. But I believe it may be listed under a different name now. if memory serves, possibly something to do with the Elks Home, which is nearby, both off Rt.221, which is the road to Lynchburg. Also located very close to the Hospital, which is actually on Oakwood Street, they are near or on Longwood Ave. If You have access to an old map it might show it. Below is a listing in the Lynchburg phone book, although being a couple hours away. I'm sure it's not what You are looking for, but... The address is: Oakwood Cemetery 3101 Nine Mile Road Richmond, VA 23223 phone: 804-646-4473 I've lived away from the area for quite a while, picturing it in my mind still is easy...just with the particulars it gets a little fuzzier. <grin> Hope this at least helps at least a little. Hi Looking for Jacobs in Virginia. Thanks, Norman F. Jacobs, Jr. Hanover Co., Va. 08-16-03
My research has turned up a notation in family documents referring to "Oakwood Cemetery on US 460 in Bedford VA on rd. to Lynchburg". I have accessed a site with a list of Bedford cemeteries, but Oakwood isn't on that list. Can anyone direct me to information about Oakwood? Thank you! Pat Rogers Researching Austin, Phillips, Fridinger, Carter ..... and lots more!
