Derrell, I found this in a site about Georgetown, DC. A Rolling House was for the inspection and trading of tobacco. There was a large one built in Georgetown in 1724. In those days there were canals that eventually went to the Potomac River. --- Derrell Oakley Teat <margaret.teat2@verizon.net> wrote: > Eric, Flake & Others > Thanks for your help. > Tobacco was used as a currency, so that makes > sense, but why: > Why were they ordered by law? > If a government warehouse why at individual > farms? > How did the govenment "pay" for the tobacco > from individual farms? > Hope my questions makes sense, > Derrell > > > A Rolling House was a tobacco warehouse. Apparently some tobacco growers put sub-standard and trash tobacco in the hogsheads. The establishment of the "rolling houses" was a quality control effort by the various colonial governments. A quote from a history of Maryland: "Tobacco was the lifeblood of the new community, and in 1745, a "Rolling House" for the inspection and trade of the crop was called for by the Maryland legislature. Completed in 1747, the Rolling House stimulated the growth of the settlement." I would assume that these rolling houses operated in a fashion similar to present day "bonded warehouses", in that the "title" to the tobacco remained with the tobacco grower until such time as it was sold. I would imagine it is where the tobacco is packed in barrels in preparation of rolling them to the river to be put on boats or barges for transport to market. Virginia has a number of "Rolling Roads" even now - but of course they are no longer needed to move tobacco from the farmers warehouses to a source for transport. --- Derrell Oakley Teat <margaret.teat2@verizon.net> wrote: > Essex Co Order Book 1716-1723 III > > Essex Co Court 18th of JULY 1721 > p 582: > Its ordered that the ROLLING HOUSE at HANNAH > GRAVES's & FRANCS PAGET's be > put down and RICHARD COVINGTON's is continued > it being according to Law > > It's ordered that the WARE HOUSES at ye CHURCH > of St. Annes Parish in > possision of JOHN HINES be ROLLING HOUSES, they > being according to Law. > > It's ordered that CORNELIUS SALE's ROLLING > HOUSE be put down and that one be > built at INGRAM'S LANDING accordign to Law > > It's ordered that JOHN ANDREW's ROLLING HOUSE > be put down and ye ROLLING > HOUSE at ROBT.
