    2. In Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol 1 by Nell Marion Nugent there are several references to Lawrence Hulett - and many variant spellings of Hulett but no other Lawrences. Page 113 - Lawsr Hulett witness to patent for Farncis Derricle & Richard Johnson Oct 14, 1638 Page 226 - show Lawrence Hulett is Treasurer of Council & Company of Adventurers and Planters for Southern Colony of Virginia 10 Dec 1620 (I'm not clear on this date - this is in a legal document and it's very convoluted) Page 259 - Shows Lawrence Hulett transported by Teague Floyne 1 August 1652 The index also shows references for him on Pages 349 & 544 but I cannot find them - I've found the index to C&P is not accurate. Hope this helps. 3. As we know there have been some changes in the early names thru the years, both intentional and some just due to pronunciation and/or poor spelling. HOWLETT is a Tidewater - NC/Va name. You might check along that line. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Rogers" <lindarogers6330@sbcglobal.net> To: <VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 9:36 PM Subject: [VAROOTS] HULETTS IN VA > I am looking for info. a LAWRENCE HULETT and family . Most of the book is devoted to the history of Pocahontas and descriptions of the early coal mining operations. However, Chapter XVII is headed "Some of the Passing Parade of Early Pocahontas." This is followed by what appear to be transcriptions of what may have been advertisements in a newspaper, but there is nothing to explain the source or to give a date. The pages are blocked off into open-end squares, some larger than others, and each individual "advertisement" is placed in a square. Page 71 has two columns of squares, 14 squares in all. The bottom left square contains the following: LESTER'S GARAGE St. Clair Street Pocahontas, Virginia J. Lester Prop. There is no other information included. I hope this is of some help. 1. Re: [VAROOTS] Tobacco and Auctioneers
    2. Paul Drake
    3. Ms. Janet; You are using the word "roller" in one of its several connotations; a "cigar roller" actually made cigars, while a tobacco roller waas not a trade, rather was a term used in decribing the labor needed to move casks of tobacco to and fro wharves, towns, plantations, warehouses, etc. The ancient road from Richmond through Petersburg to Southside VA and on South and West into the Carolinas was among many roads over which a brisk wagon trade, mail, and comerce were carried on. As with the "Great Philadelphia Wagon Road" down Shenandoah Valley utilized by thousands of wagons daily, the ancient animal trails and Indian trading paths were utilized very early as routes for ever increasing commercial activities. The art of auctioneering is ancient, and auctioneers were every bit as able as now. They sold myriad properties through courts orders, all manner of private and estate sales, Slaves, produce, and commodities such as lumber, naval stores, and "stuff" (cloth), and very often the goods imported by ship to the larger cities were auctioned at the numerous auction houses near the wharves. Such sales later were advertised regularly in the local newspapers, and your ancestor likely may be found in the newspaper archives at VA library. ----- Original Message ----- From: Janet Tennent I have a question now that we all know what the Rolling House was. 3. I would like to know where to find more information on Peter Gregory who was my great great grandfather, born in Virginia and moved to Kentucky. In Rev. B.H. Dupuy's 1908 book on the Dupuy family he gives Peter's birth date as May 8, 1767 in Virginia. Peter married Martha Minter in January 1811 in Woodford County, Kentucky and they moved to Boone County, Kentucky. Martha was the daughter of Joseph Minter from Powhatan County, Virginia and Jane Trabue from Chesterfield County, Virginia. Rev. Dupuy's book indicates that Peter had been married before. I don't know where in Virginia he was born or who his parents were, or when he moved to Kentucky. Peter and Martha named their oldest son Thomas Edmundson - don't know if that is a clue or not. I would appreciate any help. Mabel
