    3. And also did not "keep house", as it then was called. It means just what it says --- the person in question just stayed home, he/she had no outside occupation and did not attend school. Subject: Census Question What do the words AT HOME mean when listed after age and sex in the 1870 Virginia Census? It's listed in the same column as occupation. This was a 5 year old female child with a different last name as the head of household but was supposedly his illegitimate child.

    3. that 5 year old child was not necessarily an illegitimate child - could have been child of sister or brother of either his or hers and they were caring for it for whatever reason. Sure would not want someone down the road to consider me illegitimate because I lived with an aunt and uncle for a number of years. --- Paul Drake <pauldrake@charter.net> wrote: > And also did not "keep house", as it then was > called. > It means just what it says --- the person in > question just stayed home, > he/she had no outside occupation and did not > attend school. > > > Subject: Census Question > > What do the words AT HOME mean when listed > after age and sex in the 1870 > Virginia Census? Two others died in Virginia from carbon monoxide poisoning, A north carolina power worker was electrocuted. If you do a google search for Isabel"williamsburg" or other cities you will find recent newspaper articles on it. This is what I had heard via the news on the radio or in the paper, cannot recall now. christine

    1. [VAROOTS] Re: Izzy and Williamsburg??? Deaths
    2. I really haven't heard about any deaths in the Williamsburg Area, of course my cable is out, they say it will be days before it comes back. I really don't understand what happened, when the electric came on the cable was fine, less than 24 hours later it was dead, not a clue, they say it's a massive outage, again no clue. Oh before I forget, what I wanted to say is I think there were about 35 deaths from Isabel and I know that a few were from the generators, carbon monoxide poisoning, and I know there was a few from candles. The stories would be in the paper, However, the Virginia Pilot really doesn't cover Williamsburg all that much, you might want to try the Richmond Times. I know the papers put stuff on line, and I think you can do a 2week search, do a search thru obits. but I would just keep positive they probably don't have electric or phones. It's very frustrating, not to be able to contact loved ones and tell them your OK. I also discovered to my horror (I actually had nightmares about losing electric again, I did it to myself, getting all worked up) that the 2nd half of my development doesn't have electric yet. I think it's horrible. I thought we were all on the same grid, I guess not. My husband came home yesterday and drove thru the block that divides the back half of the development and he actually saw extension cords running across the street. I think it's pretty nice that people did that, hope no car runs over one of those, I wonder how many extension cords it took to run across the street? Busy day ahead, Kristina Ps. If anyone has a genealogy question, don't be afraid to ask, that's what we are here for! www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com

They were listing percentages or areas hardest hit for different cities. They had that one sentence for Williamsburg. I googled Williamsburg and Isabel. http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-81769sy0sep24,0,5705757.story?coll=dp-head lines-topnews http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-81359sy0sep24,0,1839128.story?coll=dp-head lines-topnews My next door neighbor is still without power or phone use. A pine tree fell on the lines going from the pole to the house, the lines are lying in their driveway disconnected from the the pole. Five houses from me on my street a massive tree took all the lines down there. It completely blocked the road for three days. It's now cut back so the road is clear but the tree is still lying on the lines. We were just lucky that our power is on a different grid. I have friends about a mile away who still have no phone service or power. It's like that for several streets near them also. One friend just one street away from me is in the same boat. I know it's hard waiting for word. Williamsburg has so many tall, beautiful trees. It is so beautiful there. I'm sure that the tree loss/downage is immense. We've had such a wet year. We've had more days of rain than sunshine the last year. The ground is so soaked that the trees didn't stand much of a chance. The night before the storm in Va. Beach a huge tree fell on a RV and a house. The tree that fell on our shed thursday morning, fell at 9 am. Our winds didn't become scary until about 1 pm. Our schools are closed again for tomorrow. It's going to take a while for things to return to normal for a lot of Va. Isabel affected so many lives. Margy Va. Beach, Va.

    1. [VAROOTS] Isabella in Portsmouth
    2. Hi folks, Just wanted to tell a little how Isabel hit my mom's neighborhood. My mom lives in Portsmouth Va about 30 minutes from Virginnia Beach. I believe the eye did go right over us there. We were without hot water, and power until this morning. Our traffic lights were out all over the area until this morning. I did find a grocery store open on the third day that was using a generator, but of course no ice or meat, etc..we seeked out charcoal, more batteries, none of course. Our neighbor had a little grill that we got hot water from in the morning for a cup of instant coffee. I was able to track down some ice at a shopping center parking lot where the salvation army was handing out a few free bags. It was pretty hot in Portsmouth every day about 85 degrees and mom and I raked and raked, and bagged and bagged tree limbs, pine straw, etc.. We had a neighbor across the street that had to have an ambulance come in the middle of the hurricane, he has emphysema and was on oxygen. He had tried to get a generator going in his garage and got bad fumes. Then when he returned from the hospital a day later, his neighbor went over every few hours to fix up his generator and keep it going in his driveway. He also helped to clean his yard up and stuff. We kept hearing sirens every day and night, scarey. Another issue for us In portsmouth were very long gas lines. That was so weird to m e as I have never had to wait in line for gas like that before. I have a few digital pics that I did take of some down trees. One big one landed on a neighbors roof and another through a neighbors kitchen, no one was hurt thank God. Christine
