A MOTHER'S SILENT PRAYER A Sailor now serving our country. A man by all measure, yet a boy always in her heart. An oath has been sworn The Sailor leaves to make his way. His is a new family now with siblings the world over. Yet a tiny rural town tugs at his heart, with an eternal reminder of another oath, another bond, another family, and his Mom, who sends him blessings every morning for a safe day. And whispers his name every night, that his life be an honorable one. A Mother's silent prayer for a son whom she knows, may never come home again. @sarah elizabeth rose (Veteran, and mother of son, currently serving) My poetry site: http://users.rosenet.net/poetryandroses/ My Genealogy site: http://www.gaia.edu/genclass/srose/

The City of Virginia Beach in not in any county, Virginia cities are independent. Va Beach will have it's own courthouse and records. It was formed in 1952 from part of Princess Anne County and in 1963 Va Beach annexed the remainder of Princess Anne County. On the 1850 census for "Alexandria Town" in Alexandria County, are G. W. Maxwell, age 37, and wife Virginia, age 23. I assume that with the initials G. W., his name was George Washington Maxwell. I will appreciate it if someone with marriage records for the period about 1840 would check to see if they can find a marriage for this couple. Possibly they were married in the Alexandria area. I am trying to determine Virginia's surname, date of marriage and name of her parents. Please respond directly to me at <jjmessersmith@comcast.net>. Thanks in advance. Jim Messersmith Rockville, VA

Does anyone know when & where Josiah Reese (will dtd 25 Dec 1815, Lunenburg Co., Va.) married Susannah_____? Her maiden name may have begun with a U or a W. His surname may have been spelled Reece/Rees/Reese/Rice or even Price! About 1780-1787 he bt. property on what is now the Lun-Brunswick line. Who were the parents of these two? Is he the same Josiah Reese on the 1782 tax list for St. Luke's Parish, Southhampton Co., Va.? I'm trying to determine if he's related to our Joseph A. Reese, b. abt 1798 in Va. (county unk.); married 1822 in Lun. Co.; moved to Mecklenburg Co. abt 1830-1835, where he died in 1870. Any little bit of help greatly appreciated. Doris
Hi, I saw your reply and would like to correspond with you on your CLARKS. I am most interested in Francis CLARK who moved to Garrard Co. KY. Thanks in advance, Donna Hines
Thank you, Virginia, for the Baker reference Book citation. This is the earliest Martin Baker that I have come across in VA., but he cannot be related to me because he was wealthy! ;-) There are about as many Martin Bakers in Colonial VA. as Jones, and my relatives have been trying to sort them out for more than 65 years! I continue the search now along with several others. My ancestor, Martin, we first located in Brunswick Co., a grown man, married with children, (his wife, a Clark, had an even more common surname!). He may have been born elsewhere. About 1760-70, he and his family moved to Haifax Co. on Miry Creek. Several of his children were married there in the 1780s. Then after about 17 years, he, his wife, their son, James, and his wife's brother, Francis Clark, moved to Garrard Co., KY. where he died. His dau., Henrietta Maria Baker who mar. William Hamlett, remained in Halifax, but they disappeared from the records in the 1790s. The other Martin Bakers were in Hanover, Cumberland, Kent, Charlotte and Chesterfield Counties, as well as one in Richmond. (Some of these most likely were the same man moving around.) Amazingly, at least four of them also moved on to KY.! Were they related? Some of them, but my Martin remains unclaimed. I keep hoping that more old records will turn up in Southern VA. Brunswick, in particular, seems to have a paucity of old records. "The Baker Family of England and of Central Virginia" by William Thomson Baker, Sr. says: ..."footprints" of Martin Baker in York County where the records are still available to us, for when we go along with him to New Kent all of the old county records are gone. Soon after leasing the two parcels of land in 1633 previously referred to, Martin Baker, though he still owned land, joining that which he had leased, patented additional land, "600 acres from one Robert Bues, -- against the lands of Captain Nicholas Martiau," -- Date of patent April 24, 1635. Further reference is made to this patent of 600 acres of Martin Baker in a lawsuit in York County in the year 1716, "Westlake Vs., Smith" from which we quote as follows: "We the jury impaneled and sworne to try a matter in issue between Robert Westlake, plaintiff, and (Capt.) Lawrence Smith Deft; do find for ye Deft, a patent for 600 acres granted to Martin Baker ye 24th day of April 1635. We the jury also find a patent dated ye 21st of July 1646 for 1452 acres granted unto Geo. Ludlow, in which ye land granted ye sd Martin Baker is included." "The 1452 acres, including sd Baker's 600 acres) begins at the mouth of Wormeley Creek and from thence runs up the river 555 poles unto certain marked trees, etc. Of the 1452 acres, 750 acres had been purchased from one George Menifie Esq. (A wealthy and prominent merchant of his time in the Virginia Colony.) This land had been owned by Sir John Harvey, one time governor of the Virginia Colony, who had mortgaged it to George Menifie, by which means Menifie became owner of it. This land, possibly including other lands was known at a very early date as "Yorke Plantations, as Williamsburg was for some years known as "Middle Plantation." This places the 600 acres of our Martin Baker not far from the present "Cornwallis Surrender Field" at Yorktown, now a national park. Hope this helps a little. ~Virginia << I have more than a dozen James Bakers in my tree; it's such a common name. At least four of them fought in the Revolution too! The first one I have been able to find was b. in VA., likely southern VA., married and moved to Garrard Co., KY. where he had about 9 children and likely died in Anderson or Mercer Co., KY. abt 1840.
