    1. Re: [VAROOTS] Slave records
    2. Slave sales could be private, or public auctions. If you mean, where are there records of slaves that were sold, you might look in the deed books of the localities. Transfer of ownership of slaves was recorded by deed. The deed books would list them in the indexes under grantor and/or grantee names (of the purchaser or seller). Sometimes there will be a notation that it is the sale of slaves, rather than land. Also, if there are any slave dealer records for the locality you are researching, that might be an option as well. Hope this helps, Elizabeth

    3. It became Hardy County, West Virginia. When Virginia ceded from the USA at the beginning of the Civil War, the people in the western part of the state did not want to go. They were not at all like the eastern Virginia folk on the other side of the mountains. They were finally able to form the new state of West Virginia during this period. For a good summary of the events, check Brenda's Wild, Wonderful West Virginia Webpage. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/7604/history.html Joyce -----Original Message----- From: George Davis [mailto:TheRanch@centurytel.net] Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2003 5:08 PM To: VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAROOTS] Where or what is Hardy Co VA I have an 1850 census image that appears to have come from Hardy Co VA but I can't find a Hardy Co. It lies between the Po and the Ni rivers ...<grin> I would suspect that the Ni river would have been taken to be the boundary line in that region, but it's only a guess. If I'm right, ... Spotsylvania CH lies in what would have been K&Q Co, else it would have been K. Wm. Freddie S.

    2. I'm not sure what you are asking - but Spotsylvania was formed in 1721 from Essex, King William and King & Queen Counties. Spotsylvania Courthouse is in Spotsylvania County. More of those counties split off in 1728 to form Caroline County.
