    2. Patricia A. Baber
    3. According to the SS website it contains the following: *The numident record is a computer extract of information from the original application for a Social Security card. Many records of older individuals, primarily those born in 1910 or earlier, are abbreviated records that do not contain the names of the individual's parents and may not contain the place of birth. http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim55fl@aol.com To: VAROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2003 11:03 PM Subject: [VAROOTS] Question about SSDI Forms requests Please, can someone help me ? If I send for a SS-5 form of a relative I know what info it contains and it costs $27. If I send for the abbreviated NUMIDENT printout it costs $16. What info does this document have? 2. Paul Drake
    3. One should question every single fact on a birth, death, marriage or SS certificate, even within those records kept by govt, except PERHAPS the names of the immediately subject persons, and even those names often have erroneous initials (or none), nicknames, and many variations in spelling. Just as you have made mistakes, so too have our ancestral record keepers, and those errors often are greatly compounded by the abstractors whose materials are on the net, and sold either for money or are free. In short, there ain't no such thing as a set of perfect records, and the more folks who have transcribed those early records, the greater the chance of mistake. 3. CAUTION: Nancy is correct. Further, MANY of the genealogy for pay sites are mediocre at best, and almost all abstracts for money web-sites are to a measure incomplete or inaccurate. One should always go to the source nearest the original as possible, where at least the errors will more closely be those you made as opposed to the errors of some unknown abstractor. 3. .............I have reason to believe my Burton line started in VA or close to the PA /Va bountrys. Only time will tell. Billie Jean How much do you know about your Burtons? As it happens, "Burton" as a given name appears in 1788 in my Palmer line in Mercer County Virginia, which became Garrard County, Kentucky. This name, like the Nixon name, do not appear (yet) to be family names, as was very common with that family, so we are looking for the source of those names. This Palmer family was in Buckingham County, Virginia, prior to that, and of course, that is a "burned record" county. Dang! There were, however, Burtons in that county as well. If this area is where you are looking, let me know. I understand it is a bit far from PA, but who knows where these Burtons came from, or went. Courthouse in Indiana has read my remarkes about the way I was treated in their courthouse and have changed the way they treat the family researchers there. By the by Hancock Co. Indiana has very little online to help any family history researcher and it has been that way for yrs. I guess there is no one of that county that cares about genealogy or who is reaserching. I will not say nothing but very lettle is available online. I do long distance research of the colonies and the Old Northwest Terr. for I was born and raised in Indian and have since moved to Arizona before I started family history/ genealogy research. It is a daunting experience. I do take my vacations to IN for research so I do get experience in the various libraries, courthouses, health offices, county clerks offices. All other counties I have visited I have been received in a friendly fashion. I just wish I had the time to visit the east coast and states where my ancestors stared our family lines.............I have reason to believe my Burton line started in VA or close to the PA /Va bountrys. Full name of the person filling out the form (including maiden & married name if a female) 2. Full parents names which includes maiden name for the mother 3. Where the person filling it out is working & the address 4. Date when it was filled out 5. Address where living at the time of filling out the form 6. Date & place of birth 7. Age at last birthday 8. If registered with the US Employment Service, number of Registration Card 9. Signature of the person filling out the form. 10. Social Security Number Hope this helps and if you still want to see what the, "Abbreviated Numident," will show you I will dig out my one copy and send you the information. Just let me know.
