    3. From Ye Old Genealogie Shoppe in Indianapolis I bought a large, half round magnifying glass that is terrific. I print the doc, then enlarge it in a copy machine (so I will have a copy for my files) and use the magnifier. This shop sends reps to all of the genealogy shows and seminars in the Midwest and some in the East, or you can order from them by mail. I get their very good newsletter too. 3. THANKS for the info re: the items for sale. I sent it on to my cousin, Steve, in KY. because he has added a wing with several rooms to his home for his huge collection of Civil War artifacts. In fact, he has been called by the TV program, "Histories Mysteries" to help solve Civil War mysteries. He also has written a regimental history for the regiment in which our great grandfather served. Since he is retired, he may want to look into attending this sale. E. Kaspar

    3. All should remember that there are millions of documents, Civil War mementos, tin and other type photos, and relics from all eras of the past. Most are not expensive (or should not be), yet some are almost priceless. Go to the auction, buy what you can afford, but do not plan on such as Lee's or Custer's signatures, anything signed by a Founder/Patriot, newspapers of great historical events, or such as a Civil War Officers' commission or a deed for a slave. That said, if the auction is by reputable folks, there should be many documents that reveal activities of the common man and woman, and of those, 18th and 19th Century materials are PLENTIFUL. I have collected such unimportant materials for 50 years, spent very little, and enjoy every one of those. Many have appeared here, and all students enjoy even the very inexpensive ones. Paul

    3. This sounds like a rip off to me. The only way this sort of document could have survived burned courthouses would either to have been in private hands meaning they had not gone through the courts or authentic copies and should be certified or that they had been sent to the state capitol before that county courthouse was burned. In case of having been sent to the state capitol they are available for a very nominal fee. Once in a while something rare is found but not whole batches of old records. 3. Records that survived the burning practices of the Revolutionary war, War of 1812 and the Civil War are indeed precious. I heard the British burned records in Ireland and America because the King owned all the land anyway, and to prevent land ownership after the war from being proved. There must be more motives than that of course, and how much can we believe of what we hear? I would dearly love to peek at those records.
