    2. Paul - Thanks again for sharing another interesting site with us. The first thing that hit me is Kings Highway - much of our current day Rt 17 is still known by that name. I live about 1/4 mile off of it and my shop is right on Kings Hwy in South Carolina. Looking at current maps, I see that Rt 1 and some of I-95 now follow much of he Fall Line Road going through Va, NC and SC. And Rt 29 and I-85 now follow much of the Upper Road through those same states. I once took several days to drive down Rt 30 from Philidelphia through Gettysburg and over to Chambersburg to Rt 11 which I followed down the Shenandoah Valley. That path follows the Lancaster Road and Great Valley Road which is probably how my German ancestors got to the Valley. In the fall, this is a wonderfully colorful trip!

    1. civil war sale, review
    2. i went to the civil war materials sale today, it's very very small the room was 9 x 12 and very very expensive. i might go back tomorrow to see if they have marked down any of their stuff. they had military uniforms and a few bibles and pictures. the one thing that caught my eye was the newspapers, but for $300 there wasn't a chance for me. they had all the "good" stuff in COAT BOXES, deep4-6 inch coat boxes by 2 feet long, and they had about 6 of them and they were selling the contents at $300. there was no breaking up a box or buying one thing, you had to buy the whole box. so i was outta there. for those of you who want to go, it's at the antique mall at 3900 bonney road, i think suite 111 or 116. virginia beach, I saw quite a few certificates, and other documents that were labeled $50 and higher, i was disapointed. there were some wills (originals) that probably could be found for free at pac city hall. oh and there was some lady's store accounting book and a union book i didn't look at. kristina _www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com_ (http://www.nyvagenealogy.homestead.com)

    1. DUKE, DOUGHERTY, AND MANY OTHER SURNAMES!!
    2. thehornguy
    3. Hello, all Isle of Wight searchers, DUKE family students, and other Virginia 'experts'! And thanks to all for reading this, and considering the possibilities!! This is another post about some folks who may (or may not) be a part of my family tree. One astute student says this is likely to be the 'lost' family group to which my oldest known relative in the DUKE line may belong. I hope that the info we find, with your help, will be of assistance to me in the proof of this idea. The family names mentioned are as follows: DUKE, SHERRARD, VINSON, DAUGHTRY, BODDIE, PEATE, PEALE, RUFFIN, BRIDGERS, CARTER, LASSITER, HAYES, CAMPBELL, HOWELL, GATLING, FUTRELL, and BRYAN. First, the will of William BRIDGERS was probated on April 23, 1763, in an office (or by an officer) of an office in the Isle of Wight county area. Heirs (a paraphrased version, here) were; including beloved wife Rachel (missing surname) BRIDGERS, sons William BRIDGERS, John BRIDGERS and Willis BRIDGERS, and daughter Elizabeth BRIDGERS. Executors are wife, Rachel BRIDGERS, William RUFFIN, John DUKE and Richard PEATE. Witnesses were Willis BODDIE, Morris PEALE and Sarah (no maiden surname) RUFFIN. That was the first of four wills to be probated. The next was that of Thomas VINSON, which was probated in February, 1764, in the same vicinity. Heirs are sons, John VINSON, Thomas VINSON (Jr.?), William VINSON, Jesse VINSON, James VINSON, David VINSON and daughters, Charity (VINSON) CARTER, Susanna (VINSON) MORGAN, Sarah (VINSON) FULLER and Isabel (VINSON) DUKE, and beloved wife, Isobel (missing surname) VINSON. Executors were David VINSON and James VINSON. Witnesses were James LASSITER, Thomas HAYES and Robert DUKE. A third will was probated in the February court in 1767, for the estate of Robert DUKE. Heirs were beloved wife Isabel (VINSON) DUKE and sons, Robert DUKE, William DUKE, Samuel DUKE, Benjamin DUKE, Joseph DUKE, John DUKE and James DUKE, and daughters Rachel DUKE and (name obliterated) DUKE, Elizabeth (DUKE) FULTON, (name obliterated) DUKE and Mille DUKE. Executors were wife Isabel DUKE and son Robert DUKE. Witnesses were Thomas RESPESS and Sigmond SUMMERSIL. The fourth and last will in this message was probated in June 1784, also in the Isle of Wight area. The deceased was Joshua DAUGHTRY, and the heirs were wife Elizabeth (no surname) DAUGHTRY, and daughters Lucretia (DAUGHTRY) CAMPBELL (wife of William CAMPBELL), (no name given) DAUGHTRY HOWELL (wife of Stephen HOWELL), Mary (DAUGHTRY) FUTRELL (wife of John FUTRELL), and sons Elijah DAUGHTRY and Elisha DAUGHTRY, and grand-daughters Elizabeth GATLING and Anne GATLING. Executors were wife Elizabeth (??) DAUGHTRY and James VINSON. Witnesses were James VINSON, Henry VINSON, William BRYAN and Clarky BRYAN. Finally, now, to the questions which I wish to pose!! Robert DUKE, the deceased in the third will, had a son named Robert. The final location where this son lived out his life is the infomation I seek. I am told that he made no records of land transactions or other property acquisitions in either VA or NC. Can anyone with a 'bent' for working puzzles come up with any records which tie any man named Robert DUKE to this line of the family, after the settlement of the deceased Robert's will?? As a challenge, this is more than my meager expertise can deal with!! But there are probably some out there who can see this as a good and satisfactory and exciting puzzle to solve!! Here are some leading (or mis-leading) clues for you to study. In SC, in ca. 1750-'80, in the Camden/Fairfield/Kershaw area, there was a Robert DUKE, whose wife was Nancy (UNKNOWN). They had a son Thomas, and others. The wife of Thomas was Mary DOUGHERTY, possibly a member of that DAUGHTRY (?) family?? There is little else that might be a match, but you can see this Thomas and his family at http://home.att.net/~ztlcox/ , and go to the DUKE Family pages, there. Thomas's father, Robert DUKE, in my oldest known ancestor, and I seek to learn the name of his father if at all possible. Nothing in the records of SC reveals the name I seek, so far as I have learned. If the man who was an executor in 1767 in the earlier Robert DUKE's will is the same man as 'my' Robert in SC, I am unable to verify that point, and need someone with great 'savvy' to help!! Any takers?? Thanks in advance!! Joe DUKE --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. RE: [VAROOTS] help locating area ...
    2. Kith-n-Kin
    3. Ken: Here is what I did. First, go to http://historical-county.newberry.org/website/Virginia/viewer.htm type in 1748, compare it to 2005, tells you that IoW at that time was west of Nansamond County and covered present day IoW, plus present day Southampton and Franklin (IC), with, it looks like, Nansamond being renamed Suffolk. Blackwater River divides current Southampton Co. from IoW, running from the Suffolk/Southampton line to Surry County. Much of it appears to be a swamp. But, of course, in 1748, it would have all been in IoW. So, the "north side of main Blackwater Swamp adjoining the line between Isle of Wight and Nansamond County" would put the site probably somewhere around present day Franklin, which is close to the then Nansamond line. There are some "industrial ponds" at the juncture of the counties, but plenty of other swamps around as well. "150 acres on Beaverdam Branch" -- interestingly, there is a Beaverdam Swamp just east of Franklin. There was a "Beaverdam Church" in the GNIS: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=122:1:2924986233901329782 So, my best guess is that the area around Franklin is your best bet. I'd stay away from the "industrial ponds" <G>, but I'd say any of the back roads out 58/258 towards Carswell would do it for you. I went through this adventure finding some pretty well sited land in Buckingham County, and frankly, it all looks pretty much the same, once you get out of town <G>. By the way, I highly recommend what Kenny is doing. Some of these areas are so "gone back", with an occasional patch of cleared land, that they probably resemble what our ancestors had to deal with. The trees may be only 60 inches in diameter, instead of 90, but the underbrush and such are pretty overwhelming. I had a bit of a time trying to connect these to the Library of Virginia patents, but did find a few you might be interested in: http://ajax.lva.lib.va.us/F/QU78V9MVYAV793BDV23TYVRRCSA3HKU937SFXECKLGD3V6YFU2-00432?func=file&file_name=f ind-b Title Hedgpah, John, Sr. Publication 29 October 1696. 3. You quite likely have named enough general boundaries in both counties to come quite close to those ancient homesites. There are a number of ways to accomplish what you wish to do. The easiest would be to FIRST gain a GOOD map of the counties, and then visit the county surveyor's offices in, first, IofW (in the town of IofW), and then in Edgecombe (at Tarboro). Ask those folks to direct you to the approximate area. After you have learned something of the locations, you will want to gain the USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangles of those areas. 3. Hello Wendy Thank you for your very kind offer, the person I am looking for is John Bethwaite (my husbands Gt Gt Grandfather). He emigrated from Whitehaven in Cumberland England with his daughter Jane her husband John Stanaway and children. I have him living at Newport News on the 1900 US census with Jane John & family (Stanway) mis-spelt he was abt 81. He is not on the 1910 so I think he may of died sometime during these 10 years. I have been in contact with the Stanaway family a grandaughter of Jane and John, but after the first letter and offer of help, for reasons only she knows the help never came and I haven't heared from her since, my mail to her has not been answered. It isn't that I asked for loads of info all I wanted was the burials of John Bethwaite and Jane and John Stanaway nothing else. but never mind I will be very happy with anything you can find on John Bethwaite (fingers crossed eh) Warmest regards Enid I'm off to bed now goodnight :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2005 12:47 AM Subject: Re: [VAROOTS] Request > I live in Williamsburg, VA about 30 miles from Newport News, VA.
