Those volumes/records named appear in the better libraries, the VA archives, and in many county libraries in which those parishes existed. Also check LDS. Well, that is what keeps me going. He was supposed to have come over with Lord Baltimore. I really do not know this for sure. I've heard he was from Hamburg, Germany or from the Netherlands or England. I will just keep on looking until I go blind or I find him. hehe Pat ----- Original Message ----- > Hi, Pat. In a message dated 11/25/2005 2:32:11 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I am stuck on my brick wall. Does anyone have a good suggestion? My main line Im searching I only have back to 1868 with a marriage license/certificate having them married in Norfolk, VA. I find them on the 1870 census in Norfolk, VA and then find wife on 1900 census after her husband supposedly died. I cannot find them in the 1880 census anywhere. I have tried various spellings. He supposedly died about 1888, that is all I know. I have his parents names also according to the certificate but not found him either. Christy - There are a number of reasons for him not to be on the census - 1) he died before you think, 2) they temporarily moved somewhere out of state - maybe just over the line into NC? an 3) the name is spelled so badly that you cannot find him. OK 4 - he was just left out! You might try looking for the neighbors shown in the last census and see if by some chance, they are still neighbors to a family that matches his but with a badly spelled surname. Bev
Just as another jumping off place - I went to school with a Robert Sapp in Fairfax County, VA in the 1940's. Knowing how families migrate that might be another area to look. __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.yahoo.com
My ancestors and my husbands ancestors were from Virginia and we are very proud of our Virginian heritage. We always have two Thanksgivings each year, the one in November and on 4 December in honour of 4 December, 1619. For 4 December Thanksgiving, we will serve Virginia honey baked ham. Karen

Parish records are the most overlooked of all local records, though those reveal a world about the activities of the parishioners and the neighbors of your people. I honestly do not think anyone can say they have search without reading all registers/vestry records that remain for the "wheres" of an ancestor. That applies equally to ALL extant church records for the same areas. Religion was a very large part of the daily lives of our people. Hi, Pat. You may have to search and run down ALL the Sapps who appear here anywhere at the same time that your line first shows up. Sometimes brick walls are so strong that one needs to jump over the wall, go into the years before the wall, and run down EVERY appearance of that surname to a point where those distant folks are either positively eliminated or you learn that those appearances justify further study. Remember: Though there will be exceptions found, you may be reasonably sure that the surname you have was that of the man's parents and they lived some WHERE. Instead of arguing and debating which is the true Thanksgiving Day, which I am sure is an important pride issue with some, maybe that time would be better spent with giving Thanks that you have lived yet another day, for your family, for the food on your table, for all that you have and most of all, for being able to discuss genealogy in a free forum such as this. Sincerely, Erin T. Crowe IBSSG Let my kisses fall, Upon your starry eyes, The windows of your soul, Where all true beauty lies.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Our history books certainly look to the earliest colonies, their people, the European (white/anglo) population, and rightly so, as we are an English speaking nation as it worked out. And the history teacher said these early folks were told "go westward young man" and they did and we research and see that they in fact really did for the most part. Here in El Paso, Texas, we also have a history of a different perspective. Down south of us the area had Native Americans or Native Peoples. These folks were conquered by warrior types mainly from Spain. And maybe down there someone told them in Spanish "Go northward young man" and they did. The Spanish warrior/conquistador Juan deOnate and his group came thru the Chihuahua desert northward and when they happily reached the Rio Grande River they held a large Thanksgiving party right here near El Paso. This was in 1598. So, here in our more obscure parts we celebrate that one also, and claim it as the first Thanksgiving. Of course these jokers spoke Spanish so they don't count for most everyone else. But we like our claim. Unfortunately these Spanish did a very bad number on the Native people, just as the more refined (?) northern European folks did in turn. An unfortunate kind of similarity. Ken.
