Hey Paul, what parish records are there for NC? Thanks a lot. Joe from Ohio. *** Here, again, and contrary to what previously has been written, records remain for several parishes. I have in my library a copy of the vestry minutes of St. Paul's of Chowan (1701-1776) and some of the records remain for St. Andrew's in Tyrril and for Southwest Parish of Pasquotank. Then too, some of the Vestry Book of St. John's of Beaufort for the years 1742 and following remain, and the St. Peters registry also is available at BHM Library, though it may not be checked out. The 1754 NC Vestry Act established the 24 parishes for the NC Colony (Chapter IV, 1754 Session laws). That act also appears in Colonial Records of North Carolina, vol. 25. pp. 298-304. My thanks to Steve Case of NC Archives and to Joann Harley, Terria Baynor, and Sharon Gable (and to Google) for portions of the information following: The parishes are/were as follows by name and then are listed the counties served by those. St. Paul's, Chowan Berkeley, Perquimans St. John's, Pasquotank St. Peter's, Pasquotank Currituck, Currituck Society, Bertie St. Andrew's, Tyrrell St. Thomas's, Beaufort St. George's, Hyde North-West, Northampton St. John's, Granville St. Matthew's, Orange St. Luke's, Rowan St. David's, Cumberland St. Gabriel's, Duplin St. George's, Anson Edgecombe, Edgecombe St. Martin's, Bladen St. James's, east side of Cape Fear River St. Philip's, west side of Cape Fear River St. Patrick's, Johnson Christ Church, Craven St. John's, Onslow St. John's, Carteret Paul Drake JD Genealogist & Author <www.DrakesBooks.com> 931-484-9129

Hi Bev, Yes, you have some good points ;). I did do hunt through other states in my census searching coming up empty but yes other things could be the reason too, it is just frustrating. I will have to try and get more creative in my hunting. I had also thought about looking at neighbors as you suggested and so far came up with nothing. christy ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 25, 2005 6:44 PM Subject: Re: [VAROOTS] brick wall > In a message dated 11/25/2005 2:32:11 PM Eastern Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > I am stuck on my brick wall. Pat You might want to post a query on the list that covers the Delmarva Peninsula. There are, and have been since English came to Delaware, or the lower three counties of PA, or the Jersies, depending on who or what you read, many families named Sapp. They tend, here in DE, to be in the Kent Co area, around what is now Dover, but were found in the other two counties as well. Many people from this area, on the Delmarva Peninsula, often went down the Chesapeake Bay to VA. It's not a long trip, to say the least. Where I live in DE, I"m 7 miles from the MD border, and then perhaps 4 miles to the Chesapeake Bay. I have many ancestors that went back and forth between MD and VA, in the 1600's. They ended up staying in VA by the later 1600's, but worked that headright system fairly well. I have no connection to the Sapp's, other than knowing they were/are here, and knowing where some are in cemeteries, only by wandering past. Actually, some are buried right outside the Delaware State Museum, which was once a church, and enclosed by a huge cemetery in Dover DE. Just figured you might have to check other areas besides VA. They may not have come directly from whatever country of origin to VA, but migrated, early, from DE, MD or eastern shore VA (they're there too) to mainland VA.
