Information Found Within the 1900 Census http://gengateway.c.topica.com/maaegIIabmwmJbm2s8ebaeQAeO/ Name of each person. Name of the county, parish, township, town, or city where the family resides Age Sex Color (Race) Birthplace Whether married in the last year Profession, occupation, or trade of each person over 15 years of age Value of Real Estate Whether deaf, blind, dumb, insane, idiotic, pauper, or criminal Whether able to speak or speak English Whether the person attended school within the previous year Birthplace of father and mother Free 1900 Census Images and Index for Native American Research http://gengateway.c.topica.com/maaegIIabmwwIbm2s8ebaeQAeO/ Native American research around the 20th century was buoyed by the inclusion of all Native Americans in the 1900 census. Whether enumerated within the Indian Territory, or enumerated on the many reservations spread out across the United States, Native Americans were finally being counted. This provides the researcher a great and mostly unused tool in the search for their Native American ancestors. Finding these Native Americans has gotten a lot easier with Ancestry's recent indexing of the 1900 census. While the index is complete, it's not perfect. The writing of some enumerators was poor, and the quality of some census pages is lacking. Be prepared to browse their census images keeping the following tips in mind: Most Indian schedules were added to the end of county listings. For some states however, the Indian schedules were added to the end of the state. A non-Indian MAY be enumerated on the Indian schedule, if they are detached from their family and living with an Indian family. A Native American MAY be enumerated on the general population schedule, if they are detached from their Indian family and living with a white, or black family. For their own personal reasons, many Native Americans failed to claim their heritage during the 1900 census... they ended up enumerated as white or black. As well, some whites and blacks listed themselves as Indian, when they were in fact, not. While the 1900 census in and of itself does not prove or disprove your Native American history, it can add yet one more fact in favor, or not in favor of that claim. Good luck! 1. railroad hotels etc.
    2. Paul Drake
    3. From Patty, and for those thousands of us researchers whose ancestors traveled and migrated west by rail in a much earlier day. This subject brings to mind the old "Harvey Houses", established by Fred Harvey in the late 1800's. They were usually located in fine buildings, sometimes within the depots. Excellent meals, well priced were served on starched white table cloths by pretty young uniformed ladies who underwent special training for their jobs. Sleeping accommodations were often on the upper floors. The Harvey Houses were located as far East as Kansas and Arkansas and West to California. Many survive today as museums, or have been "saved" by the corporate world and ed as and there are ten or so web sites. Patty Very interesting, Patty. :-) I well remember those services being advertised, though there were none as far east as the photo I posted, as you know. The trips were shorter and the distance between larger cities was much less east of the Mississippi, thus the result of which you speak. Thanks. 1. Re: [VAROOTS] Fw: Quit rents....
    2. Paul Drake
    3. That was the ancient definition, sure enough. By the days of the VA and other American colonies and following, the term came to mean almost any "land tax" paid to the colonial government. By then, we no longer had other than remnants and memories of the feudal system. Paul, According to dictionary quit-rent - a rent paid by a freeman in lieu of services required of him by feudal custom. So by that definition, quit-rent lists would be (I would guess)somewhat like tax lists. __________________________________________ Yahoo! DSL - Something to write home about. 3. Can someone tell me the "correct" definition of a "quit rent" and "quit rents list"? Like Forrest Gump, I am not a smart man. What I've been told many moons ago doesn't appear to be correct. Thanks!!! Paul M. **** An ancient term, the quit-rent simply was a tax on land. Those taxes were so called because for a thousand years plus, in England and in some colonies here, one paid a rent to the owner - "landlord" - on the land that one farmed or occupied from that landowner - sometimes, indeed, a "lord" - and only the privileged few owned any land atall. The term "quit" meant that after the payment of that rent, the tenant was quit - "free" - of any other rent for that year or term as the case might be. 3. Sorry about error; scroll down in my website to "Document of the Month" and click there for the photo. Such hotels were very widely used, there being no reliable automobiles or roads for such yet, and surely no motels. So, every town had hotels and railroad stations in any town of size had these, hoping thereby to gain the business of all folks and crewmen waiting for trains during layovers, transfers and delays. <www.DrakesBooks.com> Paul

    3. I have been asked "What was a 'railroad hotel' and why were those built?" Those were in every town of any size that was served by a railroad throughout the last half of the 19th and first half of the 20th Centuries. I have posted a 1913 photo of one and a short explanation on my website. Paul <www.DrakesBooks.com>
