Hi Dorothy! :-) You know, I've checked on line at the Library of Virginia, but I must not be searching properly. For the plethora of Paulett's in Louisa County, you would have thought there would be quite a few search results. It could be me, too. I'm not the best at formulating wildcard searches, LOL. I have family and friends in Halifax County. I'm planning on visiting there next May, so I am adding a full two days to visit the Library of Virginia and also Westover! (Is it beautiful? The pictures I've seen on the Internet sure seem that way!) Thank you for responding! ~Kim _____ From: Dorothy C. White [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2006 9:30 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Early VA records Kim, the Library of VA has records on the net, too. You may be able to find what you are looking for there. Westover Plantation on the James River is a hop skip and jump from where I live. Dorothy C. White [email protected] 804.795.4296
Wow! Thank you, Karen, for the information! I'm not certain, but I think I might have visited via email with Elizabeth before. I haven't seen Linda Starr's website, though, so I'll be sure to head that way. I descend from Richard Paulett, son of Thomas and Elizabeth. Richard's son, Jesse C. Paulett married Harriet Barnett, daughter of William Barnett and Ann Crawford. (Ann was sister to William Harris Crawford) The Louisa County Paulett's were (at one time) very wealthy landowners, which leads me to believe that they do tie into the Paulet family of Winchester. Thomas Paulett Sr. (who allegedly married Semiramis and then Elizabeth) was born in Virginia, so he was not an immigrant. Here is another possible immigrant/ancestor of Thomas: Name: Wm. Paulet Year: 1664 Place: Virginia Source Publication Code: 6212.30 Primary Immigrant: Paulet, Wm Annotation: Date when grant was received for land in area cited. Original certificates are on file at the Land Office, Richmond, Virginia. Other historical information is also provided. Source Bibliography: NOTTINGHAM, STRATTON. Certificates and Rights, Accomack County, Virginia, 1663-1709. Baltimore, MD: Clearfield Co., Inc., 1997. 91p. Page: 15 Thank you so much for the valuable information! I'm off to surf the websites you mention! Kim -----Original Message----- From: Karen Wood [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2006 7:33 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [VAROOTS] Westover Plantation, James River, VA HI Good luck Kim. A lot of us have asked this question. Go to " http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lksstarr/" Linda Starr's home page, where there are a number of reports under Clark. Clarks were often associated with Paulett's, but this Thomas and the other group, all in Louisa Co. We cannot prove the one found who married Semiramis Johnson and the Elizabeth Christmas is connected to those in Louisa Co VA and then to Charlotte Co VA. But, Elizabeth Harris PhD, has done a ton of work on this Thomas as well as Semiarmis Johnson. Elizabeth has her own web page on him, if you've not been there; http://www.duke.edu/web/chlamy/clark.html While it appears to be on Clark's, follow down and you'll find the Pauletts. She has a main page: http://www.duke.edu/web/chlamy/ Elizabeth is a biologist at Duke University, hence the url. It's worth taking a look. Elizabeth had Thomas Paulet (Paulett/Paulette) m Sem Johnson & Elizabeth Christmas as the s/o Thomas b. abt 1685 d.1777 with the following note; Sources I am indebted for much of this material to Linda Starr, who leads a group of persons interested in Captain Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson, and related families, and through her also to Doug Tucker for additional information on the Johnson and Clark descendants. Selected References Relating to The Ancestry of William and John Johnston, Colonial Friends (Quakers) of Virginia, by Lorand V. Johnson, M.D. Bernard Schaaf, Biographical Sketches, Capt. Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson Clark of Virginia, in Colonial Genealogist 11, 3-4 (1982) pp. 103-121 Chappelear, Nancy, and Hatch, Kate Binford, compilers, Abstracts of Louisa County, Virginia Will Books 1743-1801 She listed his children (Thomas 1684-1777) as Thomas (m Sem & Elizabeth), Richard, Henry, John, David, William, Mary, Jesse, and Mark. The only one I was interested in was Thomas. Thomas & Sem's daughter Ann m John Edward Clark, the s/o Francis Clark and Cecelia Lankford. Then the children by Elizabeth Christmas include;Thomas m Elizabeth Harvey (my 7th great aunt) 1780 Charlotte Co VA, Richard m Caty bef 1781, Henry, Elizabeth, Sarah, William, John & David. Linking the two families together has been a problem, and DNA will be the answer, if and when we can get enough particpants. The Johnson and Clark DNA trials have a huge number of participants, but Elizabeth probably can tell you if there is one for the Pauletts Hope that helps and isn't somewhere you've already looked. Happy Hunting. It's not a line I've done a lot on, but Elizabeth has. I am totally stumped on a line of mine: Paulet (or Pawlett, Paulet, etc). I can trace back as far as Thomas Paulett, born around 1701, Louisa CO, VA. Other than that, I cannot find the common denominator between him and Capt. Thomas Paulet (some have him spelled as variations of above). Captain Thomas Paulet was a son of William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, and he left Westover Plantation to his brother, Lord St. John, in his will. Reading his will, it seems he had no progeny, but my Thomas Paulett came from someone left behind from England, as he did not emigrate. Captain Thomas Paulet also had a couple of other brothers who dabbled in the early colonies; Brother Chidiock shows up on immigration records, and another William, as well as a Charles Paulet. My Thomas married (first) Semiramis Johnson, and then Elizabeth Christmas. Their son, Richard, married the granddaughter of David Meriwether and Ann Holmes. These are my allied families: Paulett, Smith, Holmes, Christmas, Meriwether, Anderson, Overton, Crawford, Barnett, Sims, Harris, Cliett. If ANYONE out there can help me find the elusive Paulett side, I would be greatly appreciative! The Library of VA, of course, has many such records, and some counties have remnants of local militia activities. Here is one of MANY sources of such records. http://genealogy.about.com/library/authors/uclittle1f.htm Genealogy without documentation is nothing. Thanks to all who sent me information! I didn't think about Familysearch.com. Ancestry showed a potential match, but when I clicked on the link to view it, they wanted me to sign up for a membership. Hi Paul, What is the furthest one can go back in time with SS numbers do you know? What info can you find with their number in terms of genealogy research? The only other one I'm aware of is Social Security itself thru the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) which is a government agency as well. Their database is typically sold to employers on a subscription basis for them to double-check social security numbers to prevent fraud. Their address via Social Security is: http://www.ntis.gov/products/ssa-dmf.asp Bob Carter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Virginia B" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 8:02 PM Subject: [VAROOTS] Social Security Death Index > Does anyone know of another free source to find social security numbers from the Death Index other than Rootsweb.com? Virginia - if you are having no luck at RW, chances are it's going to turn out the same else where, as they all have access to the exact same database ... one explanation for someone to be missing from the index, IS could it be that NO death benefit was ever paid out on the person that you are searching for ... both my Dad and his father are NOT listed in the SSDI, and the death benefit was NOT applied for, on either one ... gr'dpa died in 1974 and Dad died in 1998 ... also if the person in question, choose to draw on his RailRoad pension [ IF he had worked for the RxR ] ... he would NOT be listed in the SSDI either, because one can draw on "only" one or the other NOT both :) my other gr'dpa got left out of the SSDI because of drawing on his RxR pension ... Hi Virginia, Familysearch.com and Ancestry.com both have free searches on SS numbers. Hope this helps!
