Alexander Mack, founder of the Brethren Church, also referred to as Dunkers, immigrated to America with his family from Germany in 1729 on the Ship Allen. In the 1940's, a book was written about him entitled "Alexander Mack, the Tunker", by a descendant and one of the ministers of the church, Rev Ankrum. I would presume that Dunker and Tunker are variations of the same name. Dunker referred to their method of baptism by immersion or dunking. I am wondering if Tunker may be the German equivalent of the same name? The church is also sometimes referred to as the German Baptist Church. One of their colleges is located in Rockingham County and there is a library there named the Alexander Mack Memorial Library after the founder of the church.
