    3. Just to clarify what census information is available for Rockingham County: At the Family Tree Maker site http://www.familytreemaker.com/ Look on the right hand side of the page for an open book inside a circle. Click on that (Genealogy.com). For $9.99, one can buy a ONE MONTH subscription to this site that contains a lot more than just census information. The ACTUAL census images for 1850 Virginia plus actual census images for number of other states is available here. Also available are the Virginia census INDEXES 1810 through 1870--among other states. This is a searchable site. FTM also has CD's for sale, including the 1850 Virginia actual census images with index included (CD #309); the 1860 index for Rockingham County, among other counties, (CD #318); and the 1870 VA and WVA census index (CD #290). Understand that these CD's can ONLY be viewed through FTM's genealogy software program whereas their on-line site--with the same information--does not need the program. ************** Actual census images by COUNTY are available at http://www.allcensus.com/AllcensusFrames.html including Rockingham 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920. These are .tif images (excellent quality) but unfortunately are $49.00 each. These census images do NOT include an index. Several imaging programs are avilable on the CD's. ******************* An Index to the 1880 Census for Rockingham County was published by Iberian Publishing Company. It can be purchased through the bookstore at Shenandoah Valley Folk Art & Heritage Center. (I THINK about $10.00.) http://www.heritagecenter.com/Contact/Contact.html The site lists genealogy books available for Virginia, but the list it is not complete. If you are lucky enough, when you phone, to reach an experienced volunteer, she might suggest other books. I shall always be grateful for the suggestion that I purchase "Abstracts of Executor, Administrator, and Guardian Bonds of Rockingham County, Virginia 1778-1864" ($10.00). ************************ The Family History Centers can order actual census images for your use--I believe by county--for a nominal fee. They will keep the microfilm at their local Center for your use for a couple of weeks. (No index with these microfilms.) ************** So many people have said, "Do not count on indexes." They are so right! Find the neighborhood where your family lived and wander through it. You will be surprised at what you find. Great fun. ***************** I unfortunately find that I do not have the time to do lookups. Maggie
