Greetings, one and all: My great grandparents' (William David Mills and Ada Omelia Knupp) Rockingham Co. marriage license (dated 21 Dec. 1896) gives his parents as John M. Mills and Martha C. Randles, and her parents as Franklin J. Knupp and Emma Perry. Meanwhile, this latter couple's Rockingham Co. marriage license lists John Franklin Knupp (he went by "Frank;" hence the switching of first and middle names) and Emma Crist (daughter of William Crist and Anna Holsinger). I have not, as yet, been able to find out why two different surnames are used (I don't believe that there were two Emmas). Conventional wisdom tells me that the best source is the record closest to Emma--her marriage record, which uses Crist; but why would Emma's own daughter list her mother's maiden name as Perry? Adding to the confusion: Emma Knupp's death record (from 11 Dec 1884), the information for which was provided by her husband, John Knupp, states that her parents were __________ and Annie Perry. If there are any Mills, Knupp, Perry, Crist, or Holsinger researchers out there, help! I hope you'll have the answer. Also, who was Martha C. Randles? Who were her parents? I have not been able to find a record of John M. Mills' and Martha C. Randles' marriage in Rockingham or Shenandoah. One source lists the name as Randal, and my grand aunt, the youngest child of William David Mills and Ada Omelia Knupp, not long ago told me that her grandmother's surname was Reynolds! Again, I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bill Derrow Washington, DC
