Hi, I typed the 1850 Rockingham census book for the Rock. Hist. Soc. The families I agonized over the most were Simmers/Summers/Simmons. Sometimes even David & Daniel can look alike. The capital I and J were about the same. Wasn't too bad for a first name like Jacob or Isaac, but when it was a middle initial, it was anyone's call. I learned later at a seminar in Williamsburg that at that time those letters were made identically. No wonder it was tough. I know I never complain anymore, either, about indexes or transcriptions.
