I am pleased to announce that the Mills of Rockingham County, VA, Vol. 3 by Janet and Earl Downs with Pat Ritchie is available as of Friday, July 28 from the Harrisonburg Rockingham Historical Society. The book has 700 pages, is hardback, and is indexed. The 700 photographs are of mills, former mill sites, millers, and rural Rockingham County farm scenes from long ago. There are photographs of flour and feed bags of all sizes and descriptions plus the finished articles made from the sacks. There are 4 sections. The first is documentation on 28 more mill sites discovered since the completion of Vol. 2. Twelve of these are in Plains District. The second section features "Memories by the Sackful" exhibits at four Valley museums in 1997 which inspired the first mill book. There are several articles on the history of feed sacks and how homemakers stretched their budgets by making clothing and linen from feedsacks. Sections 3&4 contain additional information and memorabilia on 53 of the mills in Volumes 1 and 2. The books are $45 each plus $7.50 for shipping.
