"According to what I learned from the Surname-Origins list, below is > what I understand to be the origin of the Dove name." > > 1)A person of English background could actually have the name "Dove" > before he came to this country and would continue to use the name > Dove. > > 2)A person of German background whose name had been Toup or Doub or > Taube or Daube might change his name to Dove when he/she came to this > country. I was inquiring about a town called Bergton, VA, which had been called Dovesville previously which precipitated my looking into the name, "Dove. Thank you all for helping me out. Now if I could find out why my g grandmother was named Rosa Dove (middle name) Bent (maiden name). She married my g grandfather, Henry Brannon, in Gilmer or Doddridge County, WV. I'm not exactly sure where her parents, the Bents were from, but her grandfather was James Broadbelt. It was one of those things where the children of James Broadbelt had an argument and one boy called himself Bent and the other called himself Belt. But back to Dove, I have never seen that name in my genealogy connected with her or any of my family before. I know it must be a family name. Thanks for listening. Dee Toms Brook, VA >
