I'm trying to locate a 250 acre piece of land on Holman's Creek that was owned by Markus Iler and conveyed to Michael and Margaret Nease in 1772. It was bounded by land owned by Christian Funkhouser and Henry Funk. In 1777 188 acres was "leased/deeded" to Conrad Pence for 5 shillings, and the remaining 62 acres was "Leased" to Mathias & Mary Beaver for 5 shillings. In 1780, Mathias Beaver "leased" the 62 acres to Michael and Sibilla Pence, who in turn, conveyed this land to Christian Richards in 1796. My questions are: Does anyone recognize this piece of land, or the area where it was located? Does anyone know the difference between "lease", "deed", and "convey" for this time period? What would the significance of "leasing" this property for 5 shillings be? It seems like a token amount of money. Marc
