Brocks Gap is the geographic area in the northwest corner of Rockingham Co., VA. It includes the present post offices of Fulks Run, Criders, and Bergton. If you find Broadway on the map, follow Highway 259 west to Fulks Run. The North Fork of the Shenandoah River flows through the gap in the North Mountain range called Brocks Gap. "Brocks Gap" area includes the land drained by the tributaries of the North Fork before it goes through the actual gap in the mountain. I figured it is roughly 200 square miles in area. At one time there was a post office named "Brocks Gap" but it was located outside (on the east side) of the actual gap. For a short time in the 1870s there was a township called Brocks Gap Township. There were lots of German-speaking families who lived inside Brocks Gap. The language continued in some families until my mother's time, the 1940s and 1950s. I think even in the 1960s there were some people who could speak German. One man, born about 1900, wrote that his mother did not speak English until she went to elementary school. Hope this helps.
