Karen: You're definitely in the Port Republic area. In fact, it's more like the Grottoes area which did not exist then, at least as a named place. A forge called Mount Vernon Forge was located on the South River in present-day Grottoes. In fact, my gg grandfather (John Johnson listed on the page before John Burton - see 569/580) reported the birth or death of a son (I can't remember) as occurring in Mt. Vernon Forge. It you look on a current road map and locate where state route 256 crosses South River in Grottoes, the forge was located several hundred yards north of the river crossing. On the page or two before John Burton, I recognize several names and it appears the census taker traveled along the road between the Mt. Vernon Furnace, which was located at the foot of the mountain about 2 or 3 miles east of Grottoes, toward the forge. BTW, I grew up in Grottoes. There were Lees in Port Republic back then.
